NRA president: ?We?d be in prison? if NRA carried guns illegally like Media Matters [VIDEO]

WASHINGTON ? The president of the National Rifle Association says that the media are guilty of a huge double standard by ignoring news that a staffer at the left-wing Media Matters organization carried multiple weapons illegally in the District of Columbia.

In an interview with The Daily Caller?s Ginni Thomas, NRA president David Keene said Tuesday that members of his group would be jailed and plastered across the front of The Washington Post if an NRA staffer were caught with an illegal weapon in Washington.

?The whole [Media Matters president] David Brock episode is symptomatic of the way people like him look at society. If I had a firearm, legal or illegal, he?d be horrified. But of course, his people are the good people. Just like the people in the government are the good people. So it?s OK to arm them, regardless of the laws,? said Keene. (RELATED: Media Matters provided illegal weapons to protect founder)

Keene insisted that the NRA comes under dramatically tougher scrutiny.

?We?ve seen this time and again. You know, if I were to raise my voice against one of these people, they would say I should apologize, I should do all this,? said Keene.

?You can go on the internet today and find a ?Kill David Keene? game where you get to shoot me and my head blows up. There?s not one politician who?s criticized that,? he went on.

?What if I did that to Mayor Bloomberg?? Keene wondered. ?They?d demand that I be hauled off to jail.?

?If I did what David Gregory did and held up a magazine in the District of Columbia, I?d be in jail today,? he added, referring to an incident in which the host of NBC?s ?Meet the Press? illegally held up a high-capacity magazine as a prop during the Sunday show.

?If I did, or any of our people did what David Brock?s people did, we?d be in prison. And it remains to be seen whether he and his friends will be,? Keene said.

Keene went on to blame the press for playing favorites and deciding ahead of time to protect media-selected ?good guys? from scrutiny.

?[T]hink about the press coverage. Think about the front page of The Washington Post if it was revealed that the president of the National Rifle Association or somebody with him was in the District of Columbia with an illegal firearm,? Keene hypothesized.

?That would be a banner headline in The Washington Post. But for these folks, it?s something we?re going to put under the rug because they?re the good guys.?

?They?re not the good guys,? Keene concluded. ?They?re the people who think the world is designed just for them and that everyone else is a second-class citizen.?

Ginni Thomas contributed to this report.

Jennifer Lawrence Guild Awards ? Fashion Fail

PR Photos Jennifer Lawrence wore a dark blue Raf Simons gown to the Screen Actors Guild Awards. She looked okay on the red carpet, but I was not a huge fan. The dress just didn’t complement her beautiful curves. Then came the mysterious fashion fail. When she rose to accept her award, her gown seemed to split. Or did it? Apparently the gown was made “with different levels of tulle and satin” and we saw the tulle. Overall, it was just a fail to me. Blah. Luckily her speech made up for it. And the fact that she had walking pneumonia! What did you think?

Mutations Helped Humans Survive Siberian Winters

1. Just like the article says and unlike the Slashdot summary suggests, shiver-free thermogenesis is old and all mammals share it.

2. The researchers found traces of positive selection in a gene involved in shiver-free thermogenesis.

3. How do you look for traces of selection? A mutation in a DNA fragment coding for a protein can have two effects: either it changes the corresponding amino acid in the protein sequence (non-synonymous mutation), or it does not (synonymous mutation). This is because genetic code is redundant and different codons code for same amino acids, so a change from one codon to another does not have to change the protein. Synonymous mutations are assumed to be neutral for evolution (although they are not, not always).

Now, if you look at many possible variants of a gene and collect many different mutations, you can calculate whether the ratio of non-synonymous to synonymous mutations (called the dN/dS ratio) is (i) higher (ii) lower or (iii) quite like expected. Depending on the outcome of the test, you can say:

- if it is higher than expected, then there is a positive selection force at work (the gene is pushed towards change)
- if it is lower than expected, then we have a case of purifying selection; the gene is being actively maintained as it is, and any non-synonymous mutations are being removed from the population
- if it is neither lower nor higher, the gene is just not important

4. So, nice, you found that a gene related to non-shiver thermogenesis shows traces of positive selection. So what?

The answer is, not much. You do not always know which mutation was the one being selected. And even if you can pinpoint it, very often you will not be able to say what it actually does. So fine, you have a leucine replaced by arginine at position 186 in a protein chain; you might be able even to model the new sequence and see a delicate shift in the structure of the protein. How does it relate to the protein function? What has been modified or improved? No idea.

5. OK, why is that important? It is important because much of the genetic variability of the humans that we know is thought to have been fixated by genetic drift and other neutral evolutionary effects (like surfing the wave of colonization) - rather than selection. There are few examples of selection known. Light skin is one of them, and is thought to be an adaptation to the vitamin D deficiency caused by lack of sun at high latitudes. Mutation that keeps lactase being produced throughout life is another one. There were independent (convergent) events in both cases, by the way.

Look, humans are special. Special in the sense that humans are genetically extremely uniform, and the genetic differences between, say, native Australian, a blond-haired, blue-eyed Swede and a member of the Mbuti people from Africa are all together much smaller than between two chimpanzee individuals from groups living a few hundred kilometers apart. And moreover, these few mutations specific for some people but not for other seem to be more or less neutral in their character.

Finding differences that are *not* neutral, that are actually doing something is therefore an interesting thing. Notably, the few existing differences like that are linked to mundane things like metabolism or immune response (yes, some people are special because they don't fart after drinking milk, how is that for a superior race), and not, for example, to cognitive and brain development. The latter differences are found between humans and other primates.

iSlayTheDragon | Board Games, Board Game Reviews, and a ...

Big news this week. Read on!

Toy Vault acquires Firefly license [Link] Geek worlds converged last week when Toy Vault announced that it had acquired the Firefly license to create tabletop games in Joss Whedon's 'verse. I'm not terribly excited about this news, but only because licensed games don't excite me much. (This is the themeless, soulless Euro part of me coming out.) And I'm especially not too excited when the tabletop games announcement came in the same breath as novelty plush figures and pillows based on the characters. Still, time will tell.

Days of Wonder cancels Kickstarter, plans to respawn in March [Link] Days of Wonder has canceled their Kickstarter campaign for Small World 2 for iPad, citing confusing rewards and underestimated enthusiasm for the Android platform. They play to relaunch their campaign in March targeting Steam and Android platforms for Small World. I really respect this decision--namely because I wholeheartedly agree on both counts. (The tier levels were confusing, and it was also disappointing to be funding a game that was already happening on another platform just for the chance that it might happen on Android.)?Anyway, I plan to put my money where my mouth is once they relaunch, hoping that other board game companies follow suit in Android development.?

Queen Games hosts Escape design contest [Link] One of my favorite games from 2012 (and that's saying something, as I received it in December) was Escape: The Curse of the Temple, a real-time cooperative dice-rolling game that plays in exactly ten minutes. Well, Queen Games (Escape's publisher) is soliciting the Board Game Geek community for ideas for upcoming expansions. The ten best ideas receive a stack of games and the chance of getting published. Now if only I had a great idea...

Tom Gurganus of Go Forth and Game interviews TC Petty III (VivaJava)?[Link]?This is a good, laid-back interview, and it explores what is involved in publishing a game with a smaller publisher. An interesting read.

Ten literary board games for book nerds [Link] Some notable absences here (Pillars of the Earth), but hey, when you only have ten spots, you have to include the Christmas Carol board game. (I once thought about designing a board game based on Don Quixote, my favorite book. I still may do so. It focuses not so much on the events of the book, but on [what I deem] a funny thought experiment within the book. But I'm lazy. Maybe someday.)

James Mathe of Minion Games details the Kickstarter process [Link] Mathe calls this the "10,000-feet" approach, a bird's-eye view, and that's true. This was very helpful for me, someone who has zero interest in ever running a publishing endeavor, to understand what all is involved (and why so many Kickstarter projects are delayed). I also respect Mathe's doing this, as Minion has had a number of successful products published, through Kickstarter and outside of it (and the ones I've played have been very good). I expect Mathe's point about always using Kickstarter will ruffle some feathers, but when I consider what all is involved, and what the cost is for missteps, there's certainly an argument for his view. I'd be interested if he did, as he mentions in the article, go into depth about some of these points.

Board game myths busted [Link] Okay, okay: two articles by James Mathe right in a row. I'm sorry, but this is good stuff and deserves to be shared. This is straight to the point about the realities involved with designing and shopping around a game from a publisher's perspective. If you're working on your own game, this is a must-read.

How Many Prototypes Does It Take? [Link] Phillip duBarry (Revolution, Kingdom of Solomon) shows the many iterations of his upcoming game Family Vacation. I've only kind of?designed one game, and the process was enough to deter me from dabbling. Game design is serious business.

Dungeons & Dragons backlist now available electronically [Link] Wizards of the Coast has partnered with DriveThru RPG to make their backlist of D&D products available. I'm not an RPGer myself, but I'm sure that many a fanboy (or fangirl) is rejoicing at this announcement.

In case you missed it... [News, Board game glossary, Gauntlet of Fools review, Tahiti review, My year in games 2012] We had a full week on iSlaytheDragon last week. Here's what we posted. The article that's gotten the most traffic is the board game glossary. If you have any ideas for terms that need to be added, leave us a comment. It's meant to be a dynamic article.

Kickstarters of Note
We're hitting another wave of lots of good stuff on Kickstarter:

  • Formula E:?An elephant racing game from Bruno Faidutti and Clever Mojo Games. This has beautiful art and really looks like a great production. The Kickstarter window on this one is short, so you should act soon. $45 buy-in ($20 if you just want the elepheeples).
  • Hegemonic:?Another epic space game. This one looks pretty good, and I've liked Minion's track record in the past. The buy-in is high at $69, but this includes the print-and-play files early. This has already been funded.
  • Crokinole:?Wait, hasn't that game been around for ages? Well, yes, but Mayday Games is Kickstarting their newest line of Crokinole boards. (You can read my review of their last line?here, which looks much the same.) Mayday is also offering several accessories, like a carrying case and a clock (for when the board is hanging on your wall, obviously). $95-100 gets you a board; $150 gets you the whole package.
  • The Dice Tower: Season 9:?The Dice Tower is looking to up its coverage of board games this year. They have some sweet swag for contributors, mostly promos and, you guessed it, dice/dice towers, but also some dinners with the hosts. Various pledge levels.
  • Compounded:?This is the fourth game from Dice Hate Me Games, this one about combining elements into chemical compounds. The look, feel, and theme is appealing to me. $42 gets you the game.
  • Gunrunners: This is a new game from Stephen Finn (Biblios, Scripts & Scribes: The Dice Game). I like Finn's other games, and I love the look of this one. $20-25 gets you the game.

What I'm Playing
@Futurewolfie had his monthly large-gathering game night on Friday. Here's what I played:
  • Tsuro: This game was the surprise of the night for me. I've seen it many times on shelves, and I love the artwork and components, but it looked too simple to be any good. Shame on me for my prejudice--this game is a lot of fun. Is it simple? Yes. But it's not worse for being that. I really enjoyed my plays of this and wouldn't turn down another game if it were offered.
  • The Resistance: Avalon: After not playing for over a year, I decided it was time to give this another try. I'm glad I did. This update to the original is fantastic. All of the additional roles can be a bit much for new players, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. In fact, this was my favorite game of the night (we played several rounds), and there was nothing surprising about that. Also, I lost every single game of this. Oh well.
  • VivaJava: I backed this on Kickstarter enthusiastically and was very excited to get this one to the table. Unfortunately, getting eight people together who are interested in sitting through a decently lengthy rules explanation to play a 90+-minute game is a rarity (it failed to launch with my family at Christmas), so this one has been sitting on my shelf since October. The stars aligned, and we played this on Friday with the full complement of eight players. I liked the game, but didn't love it as much as I thought I would. I think I would have enjoyed it much more with a different, more Euro-friendly group (indeed--I can imagine just the kind of group this game would be perfect for). The game likely also gets better over multiple plays, which isn't likely at this time of my life (large groups of committed players are hard to come by). Still, I had a good time with this and l-o-v-e the theme and look of this game.
  • Glory to Rome: My Friday lunch game group chose Glory to Rome this past Friday. My first play of 2013 was a loss, but a respectable one. Two players tied for first, and one player won by the tiebreaker (more cards in hand)--just barely: he ended the game by drawing the last card. It was an excellent round of a great game. I'm glad I have enthusiastic players for this one, even if I lose.
Completely Unrelated Awesomeness of the Week
This geeklist. Similar to the Cheapass Games model, it shows you which games use common parts so you can make your own versions at home. However, while I think this is a great way to try?new games, I do advocate that you buy the published version if you like it and it's available. Most designers aren't cashing in on this hobby, and "the one who works deserves his pay."

But really, that's not unrelated. This is unrelated. And awesome. (Warning: Downton Abbey niche humor ahoy!)

Neuroscientists pinpoint location of fear memory in amygdala

Jan. 27, 2013 ? A rustle of undergrowth in the outback: it's a sound that might make an animal or person stop sharply and be still, in the anticipation of a predator. That "freezing" is part of the fear response, a reaction to a stimulus in the environment and part of the brain's determination of whether to be afraid of it.

A neuroscience group at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) led by Assistant Professor Bo Li Ph.D., together with collaborator Professor Z. Josh Huang Ph.D., have just released the results of a new study that examines the how fear responses are learned, controlled, and memorized. They show that a particular class of neurons in a subdivision of the amygdala plays an active role in these processes.

Locating fear memory in the amygdala

Previous research had indicated that structures inside the amygdalae, a pair of almond-shaped formations that sit deep within the brain and are known to be involved in emotion and reward-based behavior, may be part of the circuit that controls fear learning and memory. In particular, a region called the central amygdala, or CeA, was thought to be a passive relay for the signals relayed within this circuit.

Li's lab became interested when they observed that neurons in a region of the central amygdala called the lateral subdivision, or CeL, "lit up" in a particular strain of mice while studying this circuit.

"Neuroscientists believed that changes in the strength of the connections onto neurons in the central amygdala must occur for fear memory to be encoded," Li says, "but nobody had been able to actually show this."

This led the team to further probe into the role of these neurons in fear responses and furthermore to ask the question: If the central amygdala stores fear memory, how is that memory trace read out and translated into fear responses?

To examine the behavior of mice undergoing a fear test the team first trained them to respond in a Pavlovian manner to an auditory cue. The mice began to "freeze," a very common fear response, whenever they heard one of the sounds they had been trained to fear.

To study the particular neurons involved, and to understand them in relation to the fear-inducing auditory cue, the CSHL team used a variety of methods. One of these involved delivering a gene that encodes for a light-sensitive protein into the particular neurons Li's group wanted to look at.

By implanting a very thin fiber-optic cable directly into the area containing the photosensitive neurons, the team was able to shine colored laser light with pinpoint accuracy onto the cells, and in this manner activate them. This is a technique known as optogenetics. Any changes in the behavior of the mice in response to the laser were then monitored.

A subset of neurons in the central amygdala controls fear expression

The ability to probe genetically defined groups of neurons was vital because there are two sets of neurons important in fear-learning and memory processes. The difference between them, the team learned, was in their release of message-carrying neurotransmitters into the spaces called synapses between neurons. In one subset of neurons, neurotransmitter release was enhanced; in another it was diminished. If measurements had been taken across the total cell population in the central amygdala, neurotransmitter levels from these two distinct sets of neurons would have been averaged out, and thus would not have been detected.

Li's group found that fear conditioning induced experience-dependent changes in the release of neurotransmitters in excitatory synapses that connect with inhibitory neurons -- neurons that suppress the activity of other neurons -- in the central amygdala. These changes in the strength of neuronal connections are known as synaptic plasticity.

Particularly important in this process, the team discovered, were somatostatin-positive (SOM+) neurons. Somatostatin is a hormone that affects neurotransmitter release. Li and colleagues found that fear-memory formation was impaired when they prevent the activation of SOM+ neurons.

SOM+ neurons are necessary for recall of fear memories, the team also found. Indeed, the activity of these neurons alone proved sufficient to drive fear responses. Thus, instead of being a passive relay for the signals driving fear learning and responses in mice, the team's work demonstrates that the central amygdala is an active component, and is driven by input from the lateral amygdala, to which it is connected.

"We find that the fear memory in the central amygdala can modify the circuit in a way that translates into action -- or what we call the fear response," explains Li.

In the future Li's group will try to obtain a better understanding of how these processes may be altered in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other disorders involving abnormal fear learning. One important goal is to develop pharmacological interventions for such disorders.

Li says more research is needed, but is hopeful that with the discovery of specific cellular markers and techniques such as optogenetics, a breakthrough can be made.

Iran formally snubs EU after oil, gas bans

(AP) ? Iran's oil ministry spokesman says all crude oil and gas exports have been banned to the 27-nation European Union, which has already imposed its own boycott on Iranian energy imports as part of sanctions over Tehran's nuclear program.

It is unclear what practical effect the Iranian decision would have. But Sunday's announcement by spokesman Ali Reza Nikzad Rahbar could be a symbolic act designed to reflect anger at Western unity over economic pressures on Iran.

The semiofficial Mehr news agency quotes Rahbar as saying the Iranian ban will remain as long as "hostile decisions" are made by the EU.

Before the EU bans last year, the bloc represented about 18 percent of Iran's oil sales.

The U.S. and allies fear Iran could seek a nuclear weapon, a charge Tehran denies.

Masked 'Black Bloc' a mystery in Egypt unrest

(AP) ? An unpredictable new element has entered Egypt's wave of political unrest: a mysterious group of masked young men called the Black Bloc who present themselves as the defenders of protesters opposed to the Islamist president's rule.

They boast that they're willing to use force to fight back against Islamists who have attacked protesters in the past ? or against police who crack down on demonstrations. The youths with faces hidden under black masks have appeared among stone-throwing protesters in clashes with police around Egypt the past five days in the wave of political violence that has shaken the country.

During protests in Cairo on Monday, masked youths celebrated around a police armored vehicle in flames in the middle of Tahrir Square, waving their hands in V-for-victory signs.

Their emergence has raised concerns even among fellow members of the opposition, who fear the group could spark Islamist retaliation or that it could be infiltrated to taint their movement. Islamist supporters of President Mohammed Morsi call the bloc a militia and have used it to depict the opposition as a violent force wrecking the nation.

Moreover, some Islamists have threatened to form vigilante groups in response, creating the potential for a spiral of violence between rival "militias."

The bloc's appearance comes amid increasing opposition frustration with Morsi, Egypt's first freely elected president, and the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists who critics say have imposed a monopoly on power.

The anger has fueled the explosion of violence that at first centered on Friday's second anniversary of the start of the uprising that ousted autocrat Hosni Mubarak. It accelerated with riots in the Suez Canal city of Port Said by youths furious over death sentences issued by a court against local soccer fans over a bloody stadium riot a year ago. Morsi has struggled to regain control, calling a state of emergency in three Suez Canal-area provinces.

The Black Bloc models itself after anarchist groups by the same name in Europe and the United States that have participated in anti-globalization and other protests the past decade.

In Egypt, the group's secrecy and self-professed dispersed structure make it difficult to determine its actual scope. It communicates mainly by online social media. Its members' identities are unknown and faces unseen, so it's impossible to confirm the authenticity of those who claim to speak in its name.

It's even impossible to know whether every masked young man in the streets belongs to the block or is just a protester hiding his face ? or if the distinction even matters. In Tahrir on Monday, vendors were selling black masks that young men crowded to buy.

"We are the Black Bloc ... seeking people's liberation, the fall of corruption and the toppling of the tyrant," proclaimed a video announcing the group's formation, posted online Thursday. It showed youths dressed in black marching in lines in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria.

"We have arisen to confront the fascist tyrant regime of the Muslim Brotherhood with its military wing," the video said, warning police not to interfere "or else we will respond without hesitation."

Brotherhood officials, Islamist politicians and pro-government media accuse the group of violence ranging from trying to set fire to the presidential palace and attacking Brotherhood offices to ransacking state buildings, blocking train tracks and even exchanging gunfire with riot police.

The mayhem of the past five days has seen such incidents ? but it is unclear what role Black Bloc members have had, or whether claims the group is armed are true. Security officials say they arrested one suspected bloc member carrying ammunition in Cairo on Sunday.

The state-run Al-Ahram newspaper, which has depicted the group as fueling violence, said that Black Bloc members tried to break into a five-star hotel near Tahrir, and fired guns in the air when other protesters tried to stop them.

A university graduate named Sherif el-Sherafi said he was a founder of the group in an interview with the El-Watan newspaper ? though his claims could not be independently confirmed.

He said the bloc has 10,000 members nationwide, organized into groups of around 20 each, but with no chain of command. Members are trained in self-defense and how to deal with tear gas.

"Violence is not an action but a reaction," he said. He depicted the situation as an inevitable clash between the opposition and government. "What is coming is worse."

Members say the group was created in response to Dec. 4 clashes, when Brotherhood supporters attacked a protest sit-in outside the presidential palace, touching off hours of street battles that left at least 10 dead and hundreds injured.

Many in the opposition saw that incident as a turning point, a sign that Islamists and the Brotherhood were willing to use violence against Morsi's critics.

Monday night, a number of protesters praised the masked men in Tahrir Square.

"They aren't here for sabotage or vandalism, but to protect us from Brotherhood militias," said Ahmed Ali, an engineer.

Ali said police are now "suppressing the revolution on behalf of the murderer Morsi ... So we need these men to defend the revolution."

Hossam al-Hamalawy, a prominent lefist activist, said the Black Bloc youth are "sincere, they want change and they have seen their friends get killed... (So) they have decided to take the matter into their own hands."

But he said it "could be dangerous for the revolution," warning that "this could develop to people carrying arms" ostensibly in response to the Black Bloc.

"Those who topple the regime are the masses," not underground groups, said al-Hamalawy, of the Socialist Revolutionaries, a key group behind the anti-Mubarak uprising.

Morsi's office and the Brotherhood have contended for months that the opposition is using the streets to overturn results of elections that Islamists have consistently won.

Now they point to the Black Bloc as proof their opponents are willing to back violence.

On his Facebook page, Morsi's assistant for foreign affairs Essam el-Haddad accused the Black Bloc of "systematic violence and organized crimes across the country" and accused the opposition of condoning it.

The Brotherhood in a statement denounced "groups of thugs, militias of black gangs" that it accused of attacks on state institution, police and private property. "The silence of opposition political parties on such crimes ... indicates their support."

Morsi's more hard-line Islamist allies have been more vehement.

The Black Bloc "must be liquidated completely. These groups must be dealt with with violence and all force," said Mohammed Abu Samra, head of the political party of Islamic Jihad, which once waged a campaign of militant violence in Egypt.

Some ultraconservatives accused Christians of being behind the bloc, in line with their past attempts to fire up their base with warnings that minority Christians are trying to topple Morsi.

Another former jihadi group, the Gamaa Islamiya, threatened on Sunday to create a vigilante group.

Tareq el-Zomr, a leading figure in the group, said that if security forces don't bring quiet, "it will be the right of the Egyptian people ? and us at the forefront ? to set up popular committees" to protect property and "counter aggression."

A Facebook page also claimed the formation of a new militia called the "Muslims Brigade" ? though it was not possible to confirm that the group exists.

In a video on the page, a group of masked men holding rifles warned of plots by enemies of Islam and a conspiracy by Christians to turn Egypt into a Christian state and accused the main opposition National Salvation Front of helping "burn Egypt."

Unlocking Your Phone Is Now Illegal, But What Does That Mean For You?

4s unlockAll the salacious headlines are (mostly) true -- as of today, you can't unlock a carrier-subsidized smartphone on your own before the contract associated with it runs out without technically running afoul of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Granted, I'd wager that the number of people who faithfully stick to their multi-year wireless contracts far exceeds the number of people who would unlock their phones and bail, but this is still a damned lousy turn of events for all you proponents of phone freedom out there (myself included). But how did this actually happen?

Mia Love Reassures the GOP: I'm Sticking Around

MIa Love, the Republican mayor of Sarasota Springs, Utah, wowed conservatives in Tampa at the Republican National Convention this summer. After a failed fall campaign that resulted in losing a congressional race to Democratic Rep. Jim Matheson, she's again making an appeal to conservatives.

"I will stay--I don't know what I will be doing-- but I promise you I will stay in this fight to make sure our children have a prosperous future," Love said Sunday at the National Review Institute summit in Washington.

Asked whether she is considering running for Congress again, Love told National Journal she has not decided. "I'm keeping my options open," she said in an interview.

In her brief speech, Love embraced core conservative principles and offered advice on how the party should rehabilitate its image after the failed campaigns of 2012--a key theme at the weekend-long conference.

"We need to remind everyone that the GOP was originally formed to end slavery. ? We're trying to end slavery from the federal government," she said.

At a conference that focused heavily on the Republican Party's need to update its message and change its tone so that it can win national elections, Love, who is black, represents a deep bench potential candidates who can sell the GOP's message to minorities, who vote overwhelmingly for Democrats.?

Love lost to Matheson by just over 1 percentage point in November in deeply conservative Utah.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu heads the weekly Cabinet meeting at his Jerusalem office, Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013. (AP Photo/Ariel Schalit)

(AP) ? Israel's prime minister says he wants to build a broad governing coalition to face serious security threats to Israel, including Syria's chemical weapons and Iran's nuclear program.

Benjamin Netanyahu told his outgoing Cabinet Sunday that Israel must be ready for any development in the turbulent region.

Netanyahu's ticket won the most seats in last week's parliamentary election, meaning he will likely serve another term as prime minister. But with his traditional hardline and religious allies holding only a slim majority in parliament, Netanyahu has reached out to centrist parties in hopes of building a broad coalition.

On the occasion of international Holocaust Remembrance Day, Netanyahu called Iran the world's leading Holocaust denier. He accused Tehran of seeking to destroy the Jewish state, and said Israel takes the threats seriously.

Dear HN: Let's stop with the eBook stuff - Hacker News

I came to HN because I was interested in how people were using technology to do something interesting for themselves and others. Not math puzzles, or clever programming hacks, or ruminations on various celebrities. This is "making stuff people want"

"Making stuff people want" is a broad mandate. If you can show me new and applicable information about people making money on e-books, I want to see it. If one guy is leveraging Amazon Mechanical Turk to solve CAPCHTAs for gamers, I'm interested. If Chinese firms are selling time levelling up characters for rich westerners, I'd like to know about it.

So as long as HN has articles about people making stuff other people want -- how they decided what to make, how they marketed it, how they worked closely with the target market, and so on -- count me in. I love Erlang Innards as much as the next guy, but after years of reading tons and tons of minutiae around technology, I'd like to see a bit of deeper analysis about how to do something useful with my life, not fluffy nerd candy about whether Haskell is exactly as fast as C or not.

That's my opinion. It's much different than yours, and it's much different than many others, I suspect. This is why we have a voting system, no?

-----

I respectfully disagree with your assertion for the following reasons:

1) While this may be called "hacker" news, there are a great deal of discussions that are about things that hackers are interested in that don't necessarily pertain to hacking.

2) This site is undeniably linked to technological entrepreneurship. eBooks, particularly when they cover something technical, are not only relevant, but the way in which you can make money with them are akin to being able to put together a good website and make money from it.

3) It's not at all uncommon for folks who have worked in the startup business to release or write an eBook. Many things they learn in the process can be applicable to things that are not bookseller related.

In short: this is a site for hackers, not about hacking. There are many other forums out there for such things.

-----

The site is Hacker News - not Programmer News. I understand that there is obviously a strong lean towards programming when thinking of hacking, but hacking can apply to broader topics than just programming. A lot of people are interested in eBooks and marketing and if the post helps you think about those things in a new manner and "hack" the methods of writing, publishing, and marketing your eBook, then I think it's a valid thing to post. If you check out the guidelines for posts on HN, you will see:

"Anything that good hackers would find interesting. That includes more than hacking and startups. If you had to reduce it to a sentence, the answer might be: anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity."

I think that a lot of these posts will satisfy a ton of people's intellectual curiosity. If it didn't, why would it make it to the front page in the first place?

Not to mention that if you extrapolate some of the ideas found in these sorts of posts, you could potentially apply them to things like programming and startups. Seems like a beneficial thing to me to have on the site.

I won't go into whether or not some of these posts are that well written or that incisive, but I think a lot of people would agree that they belong here.

-----

I'm not a programmer, though I have some knowledge of programming.

I do think I have a hacker's mindset. That's why I read this site.

When I've posted comments explaining how I created my sidebusiness self publishing books, they've been well received. People here want to know about it.

I make around $1,000 per month in physical and ebook sales. The way I've done it could easily be replicated in a technical field. And from what I've gathered, how to do it is not common knowledge.

So while it's not programming per se, I don't think this site is about programming.

-------------------------------

How I Did It

Since I've alluded to how I've done it, I'll give a top level overview. My book is Hacking The LSAT. Irrelevant to almost everyone here, highly relevant to law school applicants.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0988127903

Createspace allows you to easily publish a physical book on amazon, and keep around 35% of the print price, before discount.

Lightning source lets you sell on other sites such as Barnes and noble, and potentially cause amazon to discount your book.

ELance let me find outsourcers to proofread, format and design my books.

Blogs in your niche are good potential affiliate partners. About 50% of my revenue comes from one affiliate blog.

Relevant forums are a great marketing venue. Hacker News and subreddits may be one of them. Make useful contributions. I created the lsat subreddit, and have an ongoing ask me anything at the other main lsat forum.

While writing, the internet is not your friend. Consider disabling it while writing. I did this for a month by moving to a country without Internet, and my productivity increase 50% (measured in good words written)

Reviews are important on amazon. Give away review copies, and ask people to write honest reviews.

All of this only works if you write a good book. Consider doing it, a good book or e-book can reall set you sort in your niche, even if it's self published.

I haven't gone deep into cross formatting, but calibre is a great conversion program, and liber writer does formatting for kindle. If publishing a kindle book, buy a kindle to test it. Kindle formatting is finicky.

-----

Was it? I didn't mean it that way. The first part or the second part?

I just wanted to show that the community has found such discussions valuable in the past, how it can be done, and what kind of results you can get even from a mid ranked book in a small niche.

-----

No, I didn't. Normally I'm pretty self aware, but we all have our gaping blind spots. No need to be rude.

I can just delete the comment if the whole thing reeks of self promotion.

edit: I typed it out on my phone, which makes it very hard to review the whole thing.

-----

Whether or not an article gets on the front page (or close) depends on whether the herd vote enough for that article, you have a method to determine that, called a vote.

After all, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one.

-----

>>>I'd prefer that spot on the top list to be about programming or something closely related

Now wait a minute. It's people who are putting it up there. Do we have the right to vote or not? And there are lessons in selling eBooks that can be applied to other things too.

-----

Before the internet, before the PC, before even ENIAC, there were writers who made money writing what sold rather than literature. They were considered hacks.

The quintessential person banging away at a keyboard is a writer not a programmer.

-----

hacking: present participle of hack (Verb)
    1. Cut with rough or heavy blows. 2. Ride a horse for pleasure or exercise.

-----

HN has a voting system, so what appears on the front page are articles HN readers want or find interesting.

If you have a problem with a front page article, you should know that some people found it interesting and that after all, you can't agree with everybody on HN.

What you are suggesting is a matt2000'ing of HN. (matt2000 being your username.)

A Dramatic Company Turnaround Story: How ... - Franchising.com

Introduction of Small Group Training, Monthly Membership Model Fuels Double-Digit Sales Gains

Highlands Ranch, CO (Jan. 21, 2013) ? Living proof that a recession can lead to positive change, Fitness Together, a national franchise of one-on-one and small group personal physical fitness training studios, has muscled up its business model with key changes that have resulted in increased sales at studios across the country.

Responding to an economic climate that forced many consumers to cut their personal fitness program budgets, Fitness Together introduced a small-group personal training program (PACK?) in late 2011 to complement its popular one-on-one training packages, and also began offering clients a monthly membership payment option. While Fitness Together clients can still purchase packages of one-on-one personal training sessions, those members now have the option of paying for customized monthly packages that meet their unique fitness needs.

PACK training, about half the cost of one-on-one personal training, offers a highly personalized approach that is vastly different from the ?one-class-fits-all? approach to fitness found in large group training classes, boot camps, and big box gyms. During a PACK training session, certified personal trainers lead small groups of up to four people using state-of-the-art fitness techniques that are suited to each person?s individual fitness levels in a private Fitness Together studio setting.

?The introduction of PACK, combined with the option to offer monthly membership plans, has breathed new life into our franchise system,? said Jeff Jervik, CEO and President of Fitness Together Holdings, Inc. ?By re-engineering our model to meet the needs of our clients, our franchise owners have seen significant increases in their client base, their revenues, and boosted morale among their staff. The energy is at an all-time high.?

Alita Brown, owner of Fitness Together in Washington, D.C., launched small group training in November 2011. She adopted the membership pricing model in January, 2012, and has since seen a steady increase in monthly revenues when compared to 2011. Interestingly, Brown noted that not only has the membership model improved her revenue stability ? it also has led to increased fitness results among her clients.

?Clients are held more accountable to their workout program with the monthly payment system,? Brown said. ?So they are getting better fitness results, and our recurring revenues are higher. It?s a win-win. The PACK training has attracted a younger demographic to our studio, and even brought back previous clients. We went from almost closing our doors to this incredible renewed success. It?s been an amazing year.?

The one-on-one and small group personal training options at Fitness Together include three proprietary programs that can?t be found at big-box gyms or other fitness studios. ASPIRE8? is a custom fitness program based on scientific research that takes clients through eight progressive phases over the course of one year. Nutrition Together by Dr. Janet Brill was created exclusively for Fitness Together and teaches clients how to eat healthy, eat light, and eat often. Finally, Cardio Together is a unique cardiovascular program that works hand-in-hand with ASPIRE8 to extend the proven results of personal training.

Fitness Together Holdings, Inc.

Fitness Together Holdings, Inc., headquartered in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, is one of the largest wellness franchise organizations in the United States. Fitness Together Holdings owns Fitness Together Franchise Corporation (Fitness Together), which franchises one-on-one and small group personal physical fitness training studios, and Elements Therapeutic Massage, Inc. (Elements), which franchises Elements Therapeutic Massage studios, providing custom therapeutic massage to meet clients? individual needs.

Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill In Senate | Tej Dhawan ...

?

I guess I was wrong in guessing it would take Congress forever to get anywhere with Comprehensive Immigration Reform. ?Senator Harry Reid has introduced S.1 in the Senate, where it was read and sent to the Judiciary Committee for review. ?The official bill isn?t visible on Thomas.gov yet, but the text per The Oh Law Firm states -?

S. 1
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.: This Act may be cited as the ?Immigration Reform that Works for America?s Future Act?.

SEC. 2. SENSE OF THE SENATE:?It is the sense of the Senate that Congress should?
(1) create a roadmap for immigrants who are here without?legal status to earn citizenship, provided they pay taxes, complete a background check, learn English, and show a commitment to America;
(2) allow students who?came to America as children to earn citizenship?by attending college or joining the Armed Forces;
(3) protect the sustainability of the American agricultural industry, including the dairy industry, with a stable and legal?agricultural workforce;
(4) encourage those who seek to?invest?in the United States and create American jobs;
(5) permit and encourage individuals who?earn an advanced degree?from one of our world-class universities to remain in the United States, rather than using that education to work for our international competitors;
(6) fulfill and strengthen our Nation?s commitments regarding security along our?borders?and at our ports of entry;
(7) strengthen our Nation?s historic humanitarian tradition of welcoming?asylum?seekers and refugees and improve existing policies that support immigrant victims of crime and domestic violence;
(8) create an effective?electronic verification?system and strengthen enforcement to prevent employers from hiring people here illegally;
(9) implement a?rational legal immigration system that promotes job creation?by converting the current flow of illegal immigrants into the United States into a more manageable, controlled, and legal process for admitting immigrants while, at the same time, safeguarding the jobs, rights, and wages of American workers; and
(10) adopt practical and fair immigration reforms to help ensure that?all families are able to be together.

So, Items 1, 2, 3, and 8 address illegal immigration, #6 is a hattip to southern border states, 4, 5, 9 and 10 address legal, highly skilled immigrants and #7 is humanitarian.

The bill?s sponsor and co-sponsors are all democrats, so I am both frustrated at the likelihood of bickering (hoping I?m wrong again) and the likely death of the STEM Jobs Act.

Mali Islamists suffer split as Africans prepare assault

MARKALA, Mali/DAKAR (Reuters) - A split emerged on Thursday in the alliance of Islamist militant groups occupying northern Mali as French and African troops prepared a major ground offensive aimed at driving al Qaeda and its allies from their safe haven in the Sahara.

A senior negotiator from the Ansar Dine rebels who helped seize the north from Mali's government last year said he was now part of a faction that wanted talks and rejected the group's alliance with al Qaeda's North African franchise AQIM.

It was unclear how many fighters had joined the new Islamic Movement of Azawad (MIA) faction. But the announcement will encourage international negotiators who have long sought to prise apart the Islamist alliance, seen as a major threat by Washington and other Western and regional powers.

"There has to be a ceasefire so there can be talks," Alghabass Ag Intallah, a member of the Tuareg tribe, told Reuters from the Ansar Dine stronghold of Kidal in northeast Mali. The new MIA would focus its efforts on seeking autonomy for the northern homeland of the desert Tuaregs, he said.

For nearly two weeks, French aircraft have been bombarding Islamist rebel positions, vehicles and stores in the center and north of Mali as a ground force of African troops assembles to launch a U.N.-backed military intervention against the rebels.

The strikes halted a rebel advance further south. French and Malian ground troops have also retaken several towns and have been mopping up after the insurgents avoided a head-on fight, abandoning vehicles and slipping away into the bush.

On Thursday, a Reuters correspondent saw around 160 troops from Burkina Faso deployed in the dusty Malian town of Markala - the first West African troops to link up with French and Malian forces.

REPORTS OF REPRISAL KILLINGS

News of the French and African advances have been overshadowed by allegations from residents and rights groups that Malian government soldiers have executed Tuaregs and Arabs accused of collaborating with the rebels.

Mali's army has denied the allegations and the government ordered the armed forces to respect human rights.

But the reports of killings of lighter-skinned Tuaregs and Arabs by Mali's mostly black army has raised the risk that the internationally-backed intervention against the Islamist fighters in the north could trigger an ethnic bloodbath.

"These people took up arms against us, our colleagues were killed ... I no longer have any Tuareg friends," one Malian soldier, who asked not to be named, told Reuters.

Outside Diabaly, a town of mud-brick huts amid mango trees surrounded by irrigation canals 350 km (220 miles) north of the capital Bamako, Malian army soldiers captured a group of suspected Islamists found hiding in a local house, said a Malian officer, Captain Samasa, who only gave his first name.

The captives were taken away in a truck, witnesses said.

AU SEEKS CHINESE SUPPORT

Diplomats gave the news of the rebel split a guarded welcome. "It is not surprising that there could still be significant rifts between what some call the military faction and the political faction," said a U.S. official, who asked not to be named.

The Islamist alliance in the north holds the major towns of Timbuktu, Gao and Kidal. It groups al Qaeda's North African wing AQIM, Malian militant group Ansar Dine and AQIM splinter MUJWA, and the numbers of its fighters are estimated at roughly 3,000.

Fears that it could pose a threat to African neighbors and Western powers increased sharply last week when al Qaeda-linked Islamist guerrillas opposing the French-led military intervention in Mali briefly seized a gas plant in neighboring Algeria. At least 37 foreign hostages were killed in the incident which ended when Algerian forces stormed the plant.

Reflecting the wider security worries about reprisals, France has ordered special forces to protect uranium sites run by state-owned French company Areva in Mali's neighbor Niger, which supplies uranium for the French nuclear power industry.

Military experts say a fast, efficient deployment of the African ground force, expected to eventually number more than 5,000, is essential to sustain the momentum of the French operations in Mali. The operation will be high on the agenda of an African Union summit in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa this weekend.

Most of the African troops for the Mali intervention are coming from member countries of the West African regional grouping ECOWAS, such as Benin, Nigeria, Senegal, Togo and Niger. But the deployment also includes soldiers from Chad who are experienced in desert warfare.

El-Ghassim Wane, director of the AU's Peace and Security Council, said Burundi was also offering troops.

But serious questions have arisen over whether the African force being deployed has the weapons, equipment and training needed to maintain a sustained campaign against the rebels in a desert and mountain battleground the size of Texas.

"It's a process that unfortunately takes a bit of time> Its never as easy as anyone would like it to be. But the political will is there, the commitment is there," Wane said.

International donors are due to meet in Addis Ababa on January 29 to discuss the African military operation in Mali, and France said they would be asked to provide about 340 million euros ($452 million).

Wane said that besides the West, the AU was also looking for financial and material support from China for the Mali operation. China was already backing an African peacekeeping operation in Somalia, he added.
