A district judge ruled on Monday that Texas can legally cut Planned Parenthood out of its new state-funded health program for women, which launches on Tuesday.
The Texas Women's Health Program, which provides basic health care and family planning services to low-income women, previously received about 90 percent of its $35 million annual funding from the federal government. When state legislators voted to cut Planned Parenthood out of the program because some of its affiliates provide abortions, the Department of Health and Human Services warned the state that if it broke federal Medicaid rules by discriminating against a qualified provider, it would no longer receive federal funding for the program. Instead of reinstating Planned Parenthood funding, Gov. Rick Perry (R) decided to start a new women's health program funded entirely by the state so that it could continue to exclude Planned Parenthood from the program.
Planned Parenthood currently serves about half of the 130,000 women in the Women's Health Program, and none of the Planned Parenthood clinics that participate in the program offer abortions. Attorneys for the family planning provider filed for a temporary restraining order against the new rules so that it could continue to serve women through the program until a final court ruling is issued in January.
Visiting Judge Gary Harger denied that request on Monday, ruling that Texas's state-funded program can immediately exclude any contractor that is affiliated with an abortion provider.
"We are pleased the court rejected Planned Parenthood's latest attempt to skirt state law," Lauren Bean, a spokeswoman for Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, said in a statement. "The Texas Attorney General's office will continue to defend the Texas Legislature's decision to prohibit abortion providers and their affiliates from receiving taxpayer dollars through the Women's Health Program."
Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas plans to remain open, despite the funding setback. But many low-income women who participate in the Women's Health Program will have to find a different provider as soon as Tuesday.

Lambrecht, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas. ?Regardless of what happens in the courts, Planned Parenthood will be here for our patients. Our doors remain open today and always to Texas women in need. We only wish Texas politicians shared this commitment to Texas women, their health, and their well being.?

Normally this is supposed to be a rumination of the year that was. A look back at some of the highlights of the last 12 months.
There. Done.
Seriously, 2012 will not go down as a memorable one for Winnipeg sports fans.
Going in, our local CFLers were supposed to follow up their 2011 Grey Cup appearance with another serious run at their first championship in more than two decades.
Instead, the Blue Bombers turned out to be a one-year wonder.
A few clicks to the east down Portage Avenue, there at least were some highs involving our pucksters.
But our exciting new taste for the NHL would turn more sour by the month, beginning with the Jets crash-and-burn from playoff contention and culminating with the hollow, clanging sound of yet another lockout.
Considering we had one the year before the original Jets bolted for Phoenix, I suppose it?s some sort of cruel symmetry we have one the year after they return.
Wasn?t 2012 also supposed to usher in an exciting new era in sports facilities in this town?
Alas, we?ve killed enough trees on that story.
Add it all up, and it?s enough to make a Winnipeg sports nut go nuts.
lnstead of revisiting the gory details, I thought we?d look ahead.
So here are five storylines worth watching going into what has to be a better year in the toy department.
Because it couldn?t get any worse ? could it?
Frozen Fallout
As of this writing, the NHL had cancelled games through Jan. 14, or more than half the season.
That doesn?t mean we can?t have a compressed 48-game campaign, probably with conference play only.
But the two sides are getting closer and closer to the edge of that cliff, as that type of season would have to start around Jan. 20.
You?d think the deadline would produce a deal, like most deadlines do in labour negotiations.
You wonder, though, how much anger the players and owners have stirred up in fans and sponsors, and how it?ll be manifested whenever they do get back on the ice.
End of the Honeymoon
On a related topic, a few members of the Jets have had bad off-seasons, led by Ondrej Pavelec?s drunk driving crash and conviction in the Czech Republic.
Others, defenceman Ron Hainsey ? the face of the lockout ? and winger Evander (Moneybags) Kane have simply raised the ire of fans looking for people to blame for not having hockey.
Coupled with the normal subsiding of the NHL honeymoon, does the local shinny shack become a less friendly place for the home side in 2013 and beyond?

Field of Dreams
The Bombers will finally move into that spectacular facility down at the U of M, and that will create quite a buzz on its own.
Until 2013?s opening kickoff, at least.
How the Bombers play in their new digs will either buff the place to an impressive shine and launch the team to new financial heights or tarnish it, hurting the team?s ability to ?maximize revenues,? as they say.
After last year ? the losing, the security clampdown, the firing of yet another head coach ? the Bombers don?t have a lot of credit in the fan goodwill account right now.
There shouldn?t be any empty seats in the first year of a facility that?s now costing $200 million.
If there are, it won?t help the Bombers as they begin repaying a whopping $95 million in debt.
Armed or Dangerous?
What happens at quarterback for the Bombers is the story to watch on the field in 2013.
There isn?t a team in the CFL more in flux at football?s most important position.
If the Bombers don?t get this right ? having Buck Pierce somehow complete a successful season or finding someone who can ? they will be doomed to extend the longest championship drought in franchise history to a 23rd year, and then some.
That?s a dangerous road to stay on, new stadium or not.
If the Bombers solve their quarterback problem, GM Joe Mack will have gone a long way to saving his job.
Entering the last year of his contract with a 21-35 record in games that matter, Mack needs to show CEO Garth Buchko he knows how to build a consistent winner, not just a team that stumbles into the Grey Cup game once in a while.
If the Bombers post another losing season, Buchko will be forced to undergo the difficult task of conducting a GM search, and the Bombers will be back at the drawing board. Again.
That would leave a lousy taste in the mouths of poor, downtrodden Bomber Nation.
It?s true head coach Tim Burke will be under the microscope in his first full season as head chef. But it?s Mack?s job to supply the ingredients.
So there?s you?re recipe for a successful 2013.
After the past year?s heartache, is that too much to ask?
If you want to keep your drains in good working order and avoid costly plumbing bills, here are some helpful DIY home improvement tips to follow.
Disposing of kitchen grease and oil Many of the tastiest foods that we love to prepare and eat are high in fats or oils. Just think of a few like meat, cooking oil, frying oil, butter, mayo, salad dressings and dips. As we rinse and wash our pots, pans and dishes, we?re sending that greasy, oily mess down the drain pipes and any plumber will tell you that that could potentially cause clogged drains and backups.
Instead of sending grease and oil down the drain, try this: ? If you have really greasy pots and pans, wipe them down with paper towel before rinsing them. Less grease down the pipes and easier washing up, too. ? If you have thin oil that needs to be disposed of, mix it with something that will thicken it enough so you can throw it in the garbage. You can add it to coffee grinds, used paper towel, stale bread, or anything else you have around; just use your imagination. ? If you have too much oil to mix with another substance, pour it into a can or jar, put the lid on and throw it in the garbage or take it to a local recycling/composting depot.
Around the house Outside of the kitchen, the drains in our bathrooms and utility sink see plenty of unwanted substances that can cause clogs and other damage as well. Soap scum, hair, and grit from the mop bucket are just a few of the offenders.
? First things first, be careful about what goes into the drains. Drain screens are inexpensive and available in many different sizes. They work well, as long as you clean them out regularly. ? If you don?t have a drain screen and are dumping the mop bucket water into the utility sink or shower, cover the drain with paper towel so that it catches the grit. ? Never dump chemicals down the drain, even the tempting ones like paint or paint thinner. ? As part of your weekly cleaning routine, pour extremely hot water down your drains.
A little preventative maintenance goes a long way to keeping your drains and pipes running clearly. However, in an emergency, don?t hesitate to call in your local professional plumbers who can assess the situation and solve your plumbing problems quickly.
?HOUSTON, Texas - They've only met twice on the gridiron, but when Texas Tech and Minnesota get together, it has made for some scintillating finishes. In 2006 the teams met in the Insight Bowl in Phoenix, Arizona. Minnesota blew a big second half lead and lost 44-41 to the Red Raiders in overtime. Friday night at Reliant Stadium in Houston, the two teams met for the second time and again played it right down to the final whistle. Tech DB D.J. Johnson intercepted a pass thrown by Golden Gopher freshman QB Philip Nelson, returning the ball 39 yards, setting up a game-winning field goal by Tech place kicker Ryan Bustin to snatch another come-from-behind victory over Minnesota, 34-31. It was announced that 50,386 tickets were "distributed" but the actual attendance was quite a bit less for the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas. A national television audience on ESPN also witnessed the exciting but penalty-filled game, which took almost four hours to play.
You would have thought that these teams were arch rivals from different sides of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis - St. Paul the way they came out and got real ugly with each other. There were a lot of big hits and chippy play from both teams throughout the game. Texas Tech registered 13 penalties for 135 yards, many of the personal foul variety. In the third quarter, Red Raider TE Jace Amaro was ejected by the officials for throwing a punch at a Minnesota player after both had crashed to the ground in the end zone.
Minnesota struck first, hitting a 41-yard field goal by Jordan Wettstein to get things going for the Gophers, making their first bowl appearance since the 2009 season. Texas Tech responded quickly with a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and a 7-3 lead with 8:17 left in the first quarter. From there neither team ever led the game by more than seven points, and the lead flipped back and forth six more times.
Minnesota countered with a 6-play, 67-yard drive ending with a 2-yard TD run by tailback Rodrick Williams, Jr. Tech came right back with a 13-yard touchdown pass completion from second string QB Michael Brewer to wideout Derreck Edwards, giving the Red Raiders a 14-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Minnesota took advantage of a short field to go 48 yards on nine plays, with taiback Donnell Kirkwood going over from three yards out to give the Gophers a 17-14 lead early in the second quarter. A 28-yard field goal by Bustin knotted the score at 17 with 8:36 remaining until halftime.
Three penalties, including two personal fouls against Minnesota halted a promising drive. It's not often you see a third-and-49 play run by an offense. A poor 31-yard punt out of the end zone by Gopher punter Christian Eldred set Tech up on the Minnesota 42 yard line. QB Seth Doege finished off the drive with a 4-yard scamper to paydirt with only five seconds left in the first half, giving the Raiders a 24-17 advantage at the break.
Minnesota scored on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Nelson to wide receiver Devin Crawford-Tufts early in the third quarter, tying the score again at 24 all.

The scrappy Gophers stiffened on defense and scored again on a 1-yard TD pass from Nelson to wideout Drew Goodger early in the fourth quarter, taking a 31-24 lead. Minnesota held Tech at bay for most of the remainder of the game, but a late 7-play, 82-yard scoring drive was engineered by Doege, culminating with a 35-yard touchdown pass completion over the middle to Eric Ward, tying the score yet again with only 1:10 left in regulation time. Minnesota then gave up the crucial turnover resulting in the game winning FG for Tech.

The Red Raiders overcame some off-the-field distractions, as former head coach Tommy Tuberville left surprisingly for the head coaching job at Cincinnati in early December. Tech was coached by interim head coach Chris Thomsen. They have hired former Red Raider QB and offensive coordinator at Texas A&M, Kliff Kingsbury to pilot the program in 2013. Kingsbury attended the game.
?
Thomsen heaped praise on Johnson and Doege, the two Tech players that made the decisive plays to win it. ''More than anything I credit those players. They really held it together ... to get to make those plays after they struggled. They kept their poise and confidence and continued to stay in there and battle.'' Regarding all the penalties, Thomsen said, ''There was really no excuse for it. We didn't play very smart.''

Johnson reflected on the tough month the team had off the field. ''As a team we just continued to fight and have faith and work together. This is a huge win for us as a group.''
Doege was relieved that his team finally put it together at the end. ''That drive where we went and tied the game, we finally started clicking. It happened at the right time. It probably should have happened sooner.''
Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill was proud of his team's effort. ''I think our kids played hard tonight. They played their guts out, and I appreciate that. We just couldn't make a play at a critical time.''
Doege won game MVP honors with a 31-of-45 passing mark for 271 yards and one touchdown. He threw two interceptions. Kirkwood led all rushers with 77 yards gained on 19 carries for Minnesota. Darrin Moore caught a game-high 11 passes for 84 yards gained in the winning effort for Texas Tech.
Minnesota finished its Big Ten season with a 6-7 record. Texas Tech wraps its Big 12 campaign with an 8-5 mark.

Seabourn sails three identical all-suite ships that cater to only 208 passengers each. Of course, dining and service is world-class.
Silversea Cruises is a new company, founded in 1994, for the express purpose of providing an ultra-luxury cruise experience aboard small and intimate ships with all the features of a large cruise vessel. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, the retired general credited with leading U.S.-allied forces to a victory in the first Gulf War, has died at age 78, a U.S. official confirmed to ABC News.
He died today in Tampa, Fla., a U.S. official told the Associated Press.
Schwarzkopf, sometimes called "Stormin' Norman" because of his temper, actually led Republican administrations to two military victories: a small one in Grenada in the 1980s and a big one as de facto commander of allied forces in the Gulf War in 1991.
"'Stormin' Norman' led the coalition forces to victory, ejecting the Iraqi Army from Kuwait and restoring the rightful government," read a statement by former Secretary of State Colin Powell, who was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the Gulf War. "His leadership not only inspired his troops, but also inspired the nation."
Schwarzkopf's success during what was known as Operation Desert Storm came under President George H.W. Bush, who said today through his office that he mourned "the loss of a true American patriot and one of the great military leaders of his generation."
"Gen. Norm Schwarzkopf, to me, epitomized the 'duty, service, country' creed that has defended our freedom and seen this great nation through our most trying international crises," Bush said. "More than that, he was a good and decent man -- and a dear friend."
Bush's office released the statement though Bush, himself, was ill, hospitalized in Texas with a stubborn fever and on a liquids-only diet.
Schwarzkopf, the future four-star general, was born Aug. 24, 1934, in Trenton, N.J. He was raised as an army brat in Iran, Switzerland, Germany and Italy, following in his father's footsteps to West Point and being commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1956.
Schwarzkopf's father, who shared his name, directed the investigation of the Lindbergh baby kidnapping as head of the New Jersey State Police, later becoming a bridgadier general in the U.S. Army.
The younger Schwarzkopf earned three Silver Stars for bravery during two tours in Vietnam, gaining a reputation as an opinionated, plain-spoken commander with a sharp temper who would risk his own life for his soldiers.
"He had volunteered to go to Vietnam early just so he could get there before the war ended," said former Army Col. William McKinney, who knew Schwarzkopf from their days at West Point, according to ABC News Radio.
In 1983, as a newly-minted general, Schwarzkopf once again led troops into battle in President Reagan's invasion of Granada, a tiny Caribbean island where the White House saw American influence threatened by a Cuban-backed coup.
But he gained most of his fame in Iraq, where he used his 6-foot-3, 240-pound frame and fearsome temper to drive his troops to victory. Gruff and direct, his goal was to win the war as quickly as possible and with a focused objective: getting Iraq out of Kuwait.
"If it had been our intention to take Iraq, if it had been our intention to destroy the country, if it had been our intention to overrun the country, we could have done it unopposed," he said at a military briefing in 1991.
He spoke French and German to coalition partners, showed awareness of Arab sensitivities and served as Powell's operative man on the ground.
Powell today recalled Schwarzkopf as "a great patriot and a great soldier," who "served his country with courage and distinction for over 35 years."
"He was a good friend of mine, a close buddy," Powell added. "I will miss him."
Schwarzkopf retired from the Army after Desert Storm in 1991, writing an autobiography, becoming an advocate for prostate cancer awareness, serving on the boards of various charities and lecturing. He and his wife, Brenda, had three children.
Schwarzkopf spent his retirement in Tampa, home base for his last military assignment as commander-in-chief of U.S. Central Command.

Players and coaches had said they would not allow the NFL's disruptive probe of the Saints' cash-for-hits program and resulting suspensions ? including head coach Sean Payton's full-season ban ? to become an excuse for failure. At the same time, few at club headquarters say it had no bearing on the club's performance.
"Forever you can equate the two and I think it's fair to equate the two," said linebacker Scott Shanle, now finishing his seventh season in New Orleans. "Never has a coach been suspended for an entire year and it's a pretty big deal when you look at the grand scheme of what a head coach does, especially a coach like coach Payton, who's had the success he's had."
In addition to Payton's suspension, general manager Mickey Loomis got eight games and assistant head coach Joe Vitt six games before returning to serve in the interim head coaching role he assumed when Payton's suspension began in the offseason. While Vitt was away, offensive line coach Aaron Kromer stepped in as interim to the interim head coach.
Two defensive captains also were punished initially. But linebacker Jonathan Vilma and end Will Smith undertook a lengthy legal battle that overturned their suspensions, which otherwise would have sideline Vilma for a year and Smith for four games.
Publicly, Vitt preached that the Saints must avoid the temptation to point to the bounty probe when things went wrong. Yet Vitt had a different take when he appeared earlier this month as a witness at a closed hearing for the players' appeals of their punishment.
Speaking before former Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, who was appointed to oversee the hearings, Vitt made it clear he felt the NFL had undermined the competitive integrity of the league with harsh punishments based primarily on the testimony of two fired assistant coaches: former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and former defensive assistant Mike Cerullo.
"How are we going to sell this to our public? How are we going to sell this to the season ticket holders, that this has all taken place? We're 5-7, we've disappointed a community, we've disappointed a region because of Mike Cerullo and Gregg Williams? How do we do this? How do we sell this?" Vitt said on Dec. 3, according to transcripts obtained by The Associated Press. "Sean is suspended for a year, Mickey Loomis for eight weeks? ... Who got hurt? Who was maimed? Look at the film. Who are we going to sell this to?"
Less than a week after Vitt's testimony, the Saints visited the New York Giants and lost 52-27, falling to 5-8.
New Orleans has since rallied for two straight wins, and can finish the season 8-8 with a victory at home on Sunday over Carolina. But that is far short of expectations for a team that won more regular-season and playoff games combined than any other during the previous three seasons.
"We can reflect much more at the end of the season. I'd rather not even try to go too deep right now," quarterback Drew Brees said this week when asked about the bounty probe's toll. "Were there distractions? Yeah. Was there circumstances swirling around us that were just crazy and we had no idea what to expect, challenges? Yes, most definitely. But I will not allow myself, we will not allow our team, to use that as a crutch or an excuse. Others might say ... 'It affected you guys.' That's fine, but we're not going to go there."
The Saints have long since acknowledged they had a performance pool that offered nominal cash rewards for big plays, including big hits, similar to what numerous other teams have run for generations. However, players and coaches have been adamant that they never ran a bounty program of the nefarious and intentionally injurious nature described by the league, and that they were unjustly singled out and punished.
Saints right tackle Zach Strief said he and teammates were angry about the way the club was treated by the league, but added that players generally have tunnel vision during the season.
"There's a period in the offseason when you can feel that way, and then once the season starts there's no time to worry about it," Strief said.
Strief said the experienced assistant coaches who ran the team in Payton's absence did a good job keeping the routine largely the same and delivering messages in meetings similar to the way Payton had in the past.
"I don't ever remember going on the field and saying, 'That meeting on Wednesday really has me shaken up.' So I don't think there's necessarily an effect like that," Strief said. "But obviously there's a reason (Payton is) a head football coach in the NFL, because he's a talented coach, and so it's not just players that lose something from him not being here. He's also an integral part of our coaching staff and they didn't have him. So you're putting those coaches in situations they've never been in.
"It's more work and more pressure and stress on everybody. Coach Payton carries this big weight, and when he leaves it has to get picked up by a lot of people. You can't deny there's not an effect, but to sit there and say, 'How many wins does that get you?' is impossible."
New Orleans has won seven of 11 games since the 0-4 start, leaving Shanle to wonder whether the impact of Payton's absence did not manifest itself most early in the regular season. The Saints lost all four games by single digits, including an overtime loss at home to a Kansas City team that is now 2-13.
"I think the start of our season would have been different. We would have won one or two games here or there that would have changed everything to where we are now," Shanle said. "We all said it wouldn't affect us, but it was much harder when that reality came. But after we got used to, 'This is how the flow is going to be now,' we played better. We just never played consistently. Our play reflected the roller coaster that was our offseason and our summer."

Many owners of new telescopes are disappointed when they look at the planets. At its largest, the planet Venus is just barely one arc minute in diameter, about 1/30th of the diameter of the sun or the moon, and all the other planets appear smaller than that.
Telescope owners complain that the planets don't look any larger with a telescope than they do with the naked eye. That isn't true of course, because any telescope will magnify everything dozens or hundreds of times. But when something is as small as a planet, even a lot of magnification won't make it look very big.

Moon size comparison The reason why the sun appears 30 times bigger than Venus is because the sun is very large. Its true diameter is more than 100 times that of Venus, or of Earth, for that matter, since Venus and Earth are about the same size. The moon appears 30 times bigger than Venus not because it is large, but because it is very close to us. The moon is 2,159 miles in diameter (3,475 kilometers), as compared to the Earth's 7,926 miles (12,756 km) and Venus' 7,521 miles (12,104 km).
In other words, the moon is just slightly more than a quarter of the diameter of the Earth or Venus. Mercury is the planet closest in size to the moon at 3,032 miles in diameter (4,879 km), about 40 percent larger than our moon. One of the reasons that Pluto was demoted to "dwarf planet" status was its small diameter of only 1,485 miles (2,390 km), two-thirds of the diameter of our moon.
Our moon is very large in proportion to its planet, Earth, more than any other moons in the solar system except for Pluto's moon Charon. But because other planets are much larger than Earth, several of their moons are much larger than ours, including three of Jupiter's moons (Io, Ganymede, and Callisto) and one of Saturn's (Titan). Of these, Ganymede is the largest at 3,270 miles (5,262 km), slightly larger than the planet Mercury.
The moon as a planet
Even if you don't own a telescope, looking at the moon with the naked eye can show you the challenges faced by planetary observers.
Earlier this week we saw Jupiter shining brightly alongside the moon. It would take a telescope magnifying about 40 times to make Jupiter appear as big as the moon does with the naked eye. When Mars was closest to Earth in 2003, it took a telescope magnifying 75 times to make Mars appear as big as the moon with the naked eye. At present Mars on the far side of the sun, and requires a telescope magnifying 430 times to make it appear as big as the moon does with the naked eye.
So, if you want an observing challenge similar to trying to spot Jupiter's Great Red Spot or Mars' polar cap, try observing detail on the moon with your naked eye.
The man in the moon
What most people see when they look at the moon is " the man in the moon." This is a pattern of light and dark caused by the albedo markings on the moon. ?Albedo? is a measure of how much light gets reflected by an area on a planet.
Darker areas on the moon's surface, which the early astronomers called "seas," although we now know that they are dry and airless, form the face of a man, in our mind?s eye. Or, they may form a woman, or a rabbit, depending on your culture. These are very similar to the dusky markings which astronomers observe with telescopes on Mars and Mercury, also called albedo markings.
If you try to sketch the markings you see on the moon, you will find, as experienced planetary observers do, that you can see much finer detail than the man in the moon. You should be able to see some of the smaller seas, such as the Mare Crisium, on the eastern limb of the moon, and one or two of the brighter craters, such as Tycho towards the southern limb.
Once you have tried to sketch the moon with your naked eye, try observing it with a small binocular. You will be amazed at how much more detail you can see, and will begin to experience the wonder Galileo must have felt when he first turned his primitive telescopes on the moon. There really is another world out there.

Dec. 26, 2012 ? Scientists have sequenced the genome of the fungus Pneumocystis jirovecii, an advancement that could help identify new targets for drugs to treat and prevent Pneumocystis pneumonia, a common and often deadly infection in immunocompromised patients. The study will be published on December 26, 2012 in mBio?, the online open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology. The organism cannot yet be isolated and grown for study in the laboratory, so details about Pneumocystis pneumonia, the biology of P. jirovecii, and its pathogenicity are hard to come by. The genome sequence represents a wealth of new information for doctors and researchers tackling this disease.
Pneumocystis pneumonia is an opportunistic infection that strikes most often in individuals with diminished immune systems. The corresponding author of the study in mBio?, Philippe Hauser of the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois and University of Lausanne, in Switzerland, says the disease gained importance in the 1980s.
"Recognized first among malnourished infants, P. jirovecii pneumonia became a public issue with the advent of the HIV epidemic," says Hauser. Today, the disease most commonly affects HIV-infected persons who are unaware of their status as well as solid organ transplant recipients and patients with hemato-oncologic or autoimmune diseases. Since the organism cannot be grown in the lab for study, researchers have long made do with studying P. jirovecii's lab-friendly relatives, species that infect animals and plants, in order to explore the secrets of the human disease.
"It is obviously better to study [P. jirovecii's] genes rather that those of Pneumocystis species from animal models. The genome has both medical and evolutionary interests for the scientific community," says Hauser.
Under normal circumstances, scientists sequencing the genome of a microorganism simply extract DNA from thick cultures of cells they grow in the lab. Since they were unable to grow P. jirovecii cells for their genomic DNA, Hauser and his colleagues took a different approach. They took a sample of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from an individual infected with Pneumocystis pneumonia, then concentrated the P. jirovecii cells using immuno-precipitation and created copies of the DNA in the sample using a technique called random DNA amplification. This mixture of DNA strands, from P. jirovecii, human, and other microbes from the lungs of the infected patient, was then sequenced using high throughput technologies.
According to Hauser and his colleagues, the fact that the sequence data represented DNA from many different species created the biggest challenge they faced. "The major challenge of the study was the in silico sorting of the reads out of a mixture representing the human host and different organisms present in the lung microbiome," he says. This challenge was met through a collaboration with Marco Pagni of the Vital-IT group of the SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, who provided indispensable expertise and infrastructure.
Once the sorting task was accomplished, the researchers assembled the sequences into a genome and attempted to identify the functions of P. jirovecii's genes. This is the first time scientists have assembled the genome of a fungus from a mixed pool of DNA from a single source, often called a metagenome. Their analyses reveal a surprising fact: P. jirovecii is a parasite that must live within the human body to survive.
P. jirovecii lacks the genes necessary for creating some of the essential ingredients of life, a hallmark of obligate parasites, organisms that must rely on another creature for sustenance. "It implies that they need their host to provide these molecules. Thus, this has been quite an important finding which implied that human beings represent the reservoir of this pathogen," says Hauser. This is useful information, since it means that people are the only significant source of the organism and that both infected people and healthy carriers represent the only control points for limiting the spread of the disease.
The genome also shows that P. jirovecii apparently lacks the ability to make toxins and virulence factors, molecules that enable a microbe to invade and take advantage of its host. This makes sense, since P. jirovecii does not cause disease in healthy people, but only runs out of control when it is not confronted with an immune response.
In the study of infectious disease, access to the genome of a pathogen provides new information that can be pivotal in combating the diseases is causes. The hope is that the genome of P. jirovecii will lead to new advances in therapies for those suffering from Pneumocystis pneumonia. The current drugs of choice for treating Pneumocystis pneumonia are antifolates, but certain isolates of P. jirovecii have already developed resistance to antifolates, an ability that is very likely to spread. Now that the genome of P. jirovecii is assembled and available to researchers all over the world, scientists can tease out clues about the organism that will help identify targets for some badly needed new drugs.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? New taxes are coming Jan. 1 to help finance President Barack Obama's health care overhaul. Most people may not notice. But they will pay attention if Congress decides to start taxing employer-sponsored health insurance, one of the options in play if lawmakers can ever agree on a budget deal to reduce federal deficits.
The tax hikes already on the books, taking effect in 2013, fall mainly on people who make lots of money and on the health care industry. But about half of Americans benefit from the tax-free status of employer health insurance. Workers pay no income or payroll taxes on what their employer contributes for health insurance, and in most cases on their own share of premiums as well.
It's the single biggest tax break allowed by the government, outstripping the mortgage interest deduction, the deduction for charitable giving and other better-known benefits. If the value of job-based health insurance were taxed like regular income, it would raise nearly $150 billion in revenue in 2013, according to congressional estimates. By comparison, wiping away the mortgage interest deduction would bring in only about $90 billion.
"If you are looking to raise revenue to pay for tax reform, that is the biggest pot of money of all," said Martin Sullivan, chief economist with Tax Analysts, a nonpartisan publisher of tax information.
It's hard to see how lawmakers can avoid touching health insurance if they want to eliminate loopholes and curtail deductions so as to raise revenue and lower tax rates. Congress probably wouldn't do away with the health care tax break, but limit it in some form. Such limits could be keyed to the cost of a particular health insurance plan, the income level of taxpayers, or a combination.
Many economists think some kind of limit would be a good thing, because it would force consumers to watch costs, and that could help keep health care spending in check. Obama's health law took a tentative step toward limits by imposing a tax on high-value health insurance plans. But that doesn't start until 2018.
