Small business accounting online | small business tips

Having an accurate accounts book is essential for any business, as every company needs to know its financial status. In big businesses, accounts handling is often outsourced, or they employ someone specifically to keep their accounts up to date. For small business, it is equally as important that accounts are regularly maintained, as it is crucial to know where you can maximise and what is losing you most money. Small business accounting however can be time consuming, especially when you lack detailed knowledge of the numerous book-keeping programmes that currently exist.

This has led to a growth of online accountancy for sole traders, a system that simplifies small business accounting and makes it easy for them to control and understand. Having your accounts online allows you full control and access of the accounts 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Because it is based on the internet, it is accessible from any computer, which is useful for small businesses that find themselves travelling widely or visiting far-flung clients but have no-one else to whom they can assign the book-keeping. Due to the sensitive nature of the information, online accounting is normally encrypted, which ensures that the financial data is recorded securely and cannot be accessed by those without the log in details.

Small business accounting further benefits from online book-keeping because figures are recorded in real time, which allows them to instantly calculate profit and loss. It is easy to create forecasts from this information and most systems also generate quarterly reports so businesses can track their progression. The benefits for small business of online accounting is that it is an organised system that requires minimum effort on behalf of the company; everything is clearly laid out and businesses can assess accounts without having to make further calculations or tackle complex spreadsheets.

For those who don?t have the time or money to employ a dedicated staff member to the accounts, the online system is perfect as it requires no technical knowledge or numeracy expertise to use. It allows you to quickly and easily assess the state of your business, where you are making profit and where you need to make cuts.

China elevates the art of KIRF, copies Austrian village of Hallstatt

We've seen some impressive KIRFs in our day (and some not so impressive ones too), but we've got to hand it to China for ratcheting things up a notch and eyeing prizes a bit loftier than Nokia phones and MacBook Airs. In the southern Chinese province of Guangdong there is now a full size replica of the Austrian village of Hallstatt, a small enclave in the Alps known for its tourism and salt production. The Unesco-recognized World Heritage Site was painstakingly recreated, down to the historic clock tower. All in all, it's a stunning achievement in KIRFdom that perfectly exemplifies why China is kicking our American butts in the quest for global economic domination -- audacity and ambition. For more, check out the BBC report at the source.

Brilliantly Glowing Jellyfish Terrorize the Black and Caspian Seas [video]

Soon enough this coming summer we?ll hear warnings about jellyfish swarms along certain beaches. Most of us loathe the blobby creatures because we are afraid of being stung, but many jellies have no stingers or any way of inflicting pain. Instead of shocking their prey, they just stick to it using special cells that line the insides of their gelatinous lobes.

But there?s a catch (get it?). The sticky jellies can sweep through ocean water like a vacuum hose, mopping up so much plankton that none remain for fish and other creatures to eat. It?s hard to imagine, but a small, brilliantly light-reflecting jelly, Mnemiopsis leidyi, which is common enough along the New England coast to catch with your own hands, has already scoured plankton from the Black Sea and is now on the loose in the Caspian Sea.

M. leidyi is a ctenophore (from the Greek words for comb and carrier), or comb jelly. The name comes from rows of hair-like cilia that line the lobes of the bell-shaped creature and beat in progression to propel it. As the video below shows, the beating cilia also diffract white light, creating a brilliant light show.

The same cilia are also what make the comb jelly so deadly to microorganisms. Copepods and zooplankton are usually extremely sensitive to even the smallest changes in water current?their way of knowing when a predator is coming near, so they can flee. But the cilia propel the comb jelly with so little water disturbance that the plankton don?t sense that the comb jelly is coming until they?re inside the creature?s lobes and sticking to its cells. The comb jelly is the ultimate ?hydrodynamically silent? predator.

Comb jellies thrive off the New England coast yet pose no threat to the ecosystem because butterfish, as well as a genus of comb jellies known as Beroe, both eat M. leidyi, according to Steven L. Bailey, a marine biologist and the curator of fishes at the New England Aquarium in Boston. But M. leidyi are not native to the Black Sea. They were introduced there in the 1980s, probably by a ship that had taken on ballast along the U.S. Northeast and later emptied it into the Black Sea. Neither butterfish nor Beroes live there, so M. leidyi has run rampant. ?It reproduces prolifically,? Bailey says. It is a hermaphrodite; it produces its own egg and sperm.

?

Scientists suggested that Beroes be introduced into the Black Sea as a countermeasure, and they weren?t worried about Beroes proliferating because they only eat M. leidyi; as the M. leidyi population declined, so would the Beroes. Suddenly Beroes appeared?but probably through ship ballast because no formal control program had begun. Yet the introduction was too late; by the late 1990s commercial fisheries in the Black Sea had collapsed, gutting fishing industries in six surrounding countries. Although M. leidyi has dwindled, ?whether the fisheries will ever be able to recover, only time will tell,? Bailey says.

?

In the 2000s M. leidyi began to appear in the Caspian Sea. Worry rose again, but Beroes followed, either in ship ballast or by their own travel through a canal system that links the two bodies of water. So far, fisheries are surviving. The tale may not end there, however; M. leidyi has recently been found in the eastern Mediterranean and the North Sea.

?

So if you?re on a New England beach this summer, and you?ve got a snorkel and mask, you stand a chance of snagging your own M. leidyi, Bailey says. He?s even found them in busy Boston Harbor. You don?t have to worry about getting stung. Or maybe you do. It seems that when a small percentage of M. leidyi ingest a littler, stinging type of jelly, they somehow absorb and move the stinging cells to the inner surface of their lobes?just to add a little jolt to the sticky cells ready to latch onto you.

?

As an alternative, you could visit the New England Aquarium, which has a large, fascinating roomful of jelly tanks. You can get your eyeballs really close to a drifting M. leidyi, even take a video, thanks to a clear, unsticky, electrically insulating pane of glass.

Smartphone maker HTC cuts sales target

Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC Corp cut its second-quarter revenue target, citing lower-than-anticipated sales to Europe and delayed product sales in the United States, while China is doing better-than-expected, it said.

The world's No.5 smartphone vendor suffered a rapid fall from grace in the second half of last year as its phones failed to keep up with Apple's iPhones and Samsung's Galaxy range, after sales had grown four-fold and shares more than tripled in the 1-1/2 years since 2010.

It cut its second-quarter revenue target by 13.3 percent on Wednesday.

"A bigger softness is from Europe than the U.S.," chief financial officer Chia-Lin Chang told an analyst telephone conference, blaming the macroeconomic situation and intensified competition in that region.

In the U.S., HTC experienced a delay in sales of two new smartphones, the HTC One X and HTC EVO 4G LTE, for around two weeks last month due to a requirement for customs inspections after losing a patent dispute with Apple.

"But sales in China are better than we thought; we expect China will contribute a representative percentage to the revenue this quarter," Chang added.

HTC cut its second-quarter revenue target to T$91 billion ($3.03 billion) from T$105 billion, compared to T$67.79 billion in the first quarter. It also revised down its operating margin forecast by 2 percentage points to 9 percent, but kept gross margin at 27 percent.

The revision includes a one-time charge of T$2.6 billion to facilitate the clearance of inventory for certain products shipped from last year, an HTC statement showed. Without the charge, the revenue would have been T$93.6 billion.

"Given all the things happening in the second quarter here, we certainly hope we can get the right guidance and have a more smooth transition going forward," Chang said.

But analysts said the cut in forecast overshadowed the outlook for the second half of the year for both HTC and the whole industry.

"If the reason is more because of the macro concern, then it's not in the control of the company, no matter how good its products are," said Bonnie Chang, an analyst from Yuanta Securities. "It can even affect the business of Apple."

HTC's consolidated sales for May were T$30 billion, down 26.13 percent from the same month a year earlier.

HTC reported a 70 percent tumble in net profit in the first quarter to T$4.464 billion ($151.5 million), just below forecasts.

Conducting a Periodic Review of Your Estate Plan - The Henssler ...

With your estate plan successfully implemented, one final but critical step remains: carrying out a periodic review and update.

Imagine this: since you implemented your estate plan five years ago, you got divorced and remarried, sold your house and bought a boat to live on, sold your legal practice and invested the money that provides you with enough income so you no longer have to work, and reconciled with your estranged daughter. This scenario may look more like fantasy than reality, but imagine how these major changes over a five-year period may affect your estate. And that's without considering changes in tax laws, the stock market, the economic climate, or other external factors. After all, if the only constant is change, it isn't unreasonable to speculate that your wishes have changed, the advantages you sought have eroded or vanished, or even that new opportunities now exist that could offer a better value for your estate. A periodic review can give you peace of mind.

When Should You Conduct a Review of Your Estate Plan?

Every Year for Large Estates
Those of you with large estates (over the applicable exclusion amount) should review your plan annually or at certain life events that are suggested in the following paragraphs. Not a year goes by without significant changes in the tax laws. You need to stay on top of these to get the best results.

Every Five Years for Small Estates
Those of you with smaller estates (under the applicable exclusion amount) need only review every five years or following changes in your life events. Your estate will not be as affected by economic factors and changes in the tax laws as a larger estate might be. However, your personal situation is bound to change, and reviewing every five years will bring your plan up to date with your current situation.

Upon Changes in Estate Valuation
If the value of your estate has changed more than 20 percent over the last two years, you may need to update your estate plan.

Upon Economic Changes
You need to review your estate plan if there has been a change in the value of your assets or your income level or requirements, or if you are retiring.

Upon Changes in Occupation or Employment
If you or your spouse changed jobs, you may need to make revisions in your estate plan.

Upon Changes in Family Situations
You need to update your plan if:

? Your (or your children's or grandchildren's) marital status has changed;
? A?child (or grandchild) has been born or adopted;
? Your spouse, child, or grandchild has died;
? You or a close family member has become ill or incapacitated, or
? Other individuals (e.g., your parents) have become dependent on you.

For example, many states have a law revoking all or part of your will if you divorce or remarry.

Upon Changes in Your Closely Held Business Interest
A review is in order if you have:

? Formed, purchased, or sold a closely held business;
? Reorganized or liquidated a closely held business;
? Instituted a pension plan;
? Executed a buy-sell agreement;
? Deferred compensation, or
? Changed employee benefits.

Upon Changes in the Estate Plan
Of course, if you make a change in part of your estate plan (e.g., create a trust, execute a codicil, etc.), you should review the estate plan as a whole to ensure that it remains cohesive and effective.

Upon Major Transactions
Be sure to check your plan if you have:

? Received a sizable inheritance, bequest, or similar disposition;
? Made or received substantial gifts;
? Borrowed or lent substantial amounts of money
? Purchased, leased, or sold material assets or investments;
? Changed residences;
? Changed significant property ownership, or
? Become involved in a lawsuit.

Upon Changes in Insurance Coverage
Making changes in your insurance coverage may change your estate planning needs or may make changes necessary. Therefore, inform your estate planning advisor if you make any change to life insurance, health insurance, disability insurance, medical insurance, liability insurance, or beneficiary designations.

Upon Death of Trustee/Executor/Guardian
If a designated trustee, executor, or guardian dies or changes his or her mind about serving, you need to revise the parts of your estate plan affected (e.g., the trust agreement and your will) to replace that individual.

Upon Other Important Changes
None of us has a crystal ball. We can't think of all the conditions that should prompt us to review and revise our estate plans. Use your common sense. Have your feelings about charity changed? Has your son finally become financially responsible? Has your spouse's health been declining? Are your children through college now? All you need to do is give it a little thought from time to time.

Samsung Galaxy S III To Hit Five U.S. Carriers In June, Sprint And T-Mobile Set For June 21 Launch

gs3And here we go! Samsung announced late last night that the long-awaited Galaxy S III would hit five of the U.S.'s biggest carriers -- Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and U.S. Cellular -- this month, with prices on contract starting at $199. There's no news yet on specific launch dates as those announcements are being left up to individual carriers, but a few carriers have already started to get their ducks in a row for an impending launch. AT&T has whipped up an informative preview page for eager consumers to peruse, but Verizon has just announced that they'll be taking pre-orders for the device starting on June 6. They've also revealed their 16GB model will cost $199, while the 32GB model will set folks back $249, and it seems as though everyone else is following suit.

Sony demos Cross-Play, announces Cross-Controller DLC for Vita and PS3

Sony demos Cross-Play, announces Cross-Controller DLC for Vita and PS3

One of the things we can look forward to in the coming year from Sony is some some lovely cross-platform content that makes the worlds of the PS Vita and PS3 just a bit more tightly integrated. Games like PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale will allow players to compete against each other, regardless of which Sony console they're using. The so-called cross-play functionality isn't limited to live play either, some games (including the aforementioned PS All-Stars) will allow you to save your game on one and pick up where you left off on the other. There will also be new downloadable content that will span Sony's home and portable consoles. The cross-controller DLC will come first to Little Big Planet 2, which will let you use your Vita to actually create levels on the PS3. Sadly Sony wouldn't divulge too many more details, but we can expect Battle Royale to hit shelves this holiday season. We guess this multi-screen entertainment thing is really going to take off this year.

An Opening For Car Lovers :Car Loans Bad Credit

The earth was a peaceful planet. We could hear only the sounds of the birds chirpping and bees wandering around the flowers. The people always lead a peaceful life. But now the things have completly changed. The peaceful world has now turned to be the most noisy world. A great advancement has happened in the automobile industry from the cycles to schooters and now the place is occupied by cars. Once you step out of the house, it is not possible to count the number of brand new cars moving around. This indicate that there is a tremendous increase in the production of the cars. Every body is trying to own a car irrespective of their purchasing power.

The actual fact is that inorder to buy a good conditioned and highly maintained car, one has to spend hundreds of dollars. The solution is bought by various financial institutions in the form of various car loans.

But if the person is having a bad credit history, then the scenerio changes. Most of the people think that it is not possible to get a new car loan because of the credit factor. Due to the recent economic crisis, there are many around the world not able to maintain their credit scores.

Inorder to help those people a new venture is launched by the financial bodies . This is reffered as "car loans bad credit". this loan scheme is different from the usual loan schemes provided by the banks. This car loans are applicable to both the new and old cars. This scheme is usually worked out through a car dealer. Here the applicant must first settle the financial options rather than choosing the type of car. Depending upon the applicants income, particular amount has to be fixed inorder to finance the car. Based on that amount the dealer will search for a car. Since the loan is issued based on bad credit , the interest rate will be higher. The applicant must be ready to do down payment monthly. If the down payments are done correctly a trust will be built between the lender and the borrower. this may help in reducing the interest rate to be paid. This will also help the borrower to bring up the credit history. Here the interest rate is higher when compared to the normal car loans. It is also easy to approve the car loan, if the borrower is ready to do down payment.

The best place to search for financing a car is to look online because when we diectly deal with a dealer our options are limited whereas on internet the online market is highly competative and we will be able to find a dealer according to our terms easily.

Santana gives Mets their first no-no

Bad call and great catch helps Santana get Mets' first no-hitter in franchise's 8020th game

Image: Johan SantanaGetty Images

The New York Mets' Johan Santana, center,?hugs catcher Josh Thole, left,?after throwing the first no-hitter in franchise history against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday.

By MIKE FITZPATRICK

updated 3:09 a.m. ET June 2, 2012

NEW YORK - For more than 50 years, the New York Mets chased that elusive no-hitter. Johan Santana finally finished the job.

Santana pitched the first no-hitter in team history, helped by an umpire's missed call and an outstanding catch in left field in an 8-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night.

After a string of close calls over the last five decades, Santana went all the way in the Mets' 8,020th game.

"Finally, the first one," he said. "That is the greatest feeling ever."

He needed a couple of key assists to pull it off.

Carlos Beltran, back at Citi Field for the first time since the Mets traded him last July, hit a line drive over third base in the sixth inning that hit the foul line and should have been called fair. But third base umpire Adrian Johnson ruled it foul and the no-hitter was intact - even though a replay clearly showed a mark where the ball landed on the chalk line.

"I saw the ball hitting outside the line, just foul," Johnson told a pool reporter.

The umpire acknowledged that he saw the replay afterward but declined to comment.

"It was in front of his face, and he called it foul. I thought it was a fair ball," Beltran said. "At the end of the day, one hit wasn't going to make a difference in the ballgame. We needed to score more runs and we didn't do that."

Hometown kid Mike Baxter then made a tremendous catch in left field to rob Yadier Molina of extra bases in the seventh. Baxter crashed into the wall, injured his shoulder and left the game.

Making his 11th start since missing last season following shoulder surgery, Santana (3-2) threw a career-high 134 pitches in his second consecutive shutout. Relying on a sneaky fastball and the baffling changeup that's always been his signature, he struck out eight and walked five with wind gusting up to 30 mph.

"Amazing," Santana said after tossing the majors' third no-hitter this year. "Coming into this season I was just hoping to come back and stay healthy and help this team, and now I am in this situation in the greatest city for baseball."

Before the game, Mets manager Terry Collins said he planned to limit Santana to 110-115 pitches all season.

"I just couldn't take him out," a choked-up Collins said afterward.

Born in 1962, the Mets have been built on pitching when they've fielded their best teams. But neither Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver nor Dwight Gooden could throw a no-hitter for the Mets - though all three are among the seven pitchers who tossed one after leaving the team.

Philip Humber is another one. He pitched a perfect game for the Chicago White Sox at Seattle on April 21, and Jered Weaver of the Los Angeles Angels no-hit Minnesota on May 2.

Following the game, Santana addressed his teammates in the clubhouse. He thanked them and said: "Yeah, baby! Believe it!"

"I'm really happy for them," said Boston manager Bobby Valentine, who managed the Mets from 1996-2002. "That's been an albatross over the pitching in that franchise forever, since '62. One of the best pitchers they've ever had threw it and that also gives credibility to it."

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez congratulated Santana in a message on Twitter, calling him a "golden left-hander" and "Giant Johan."

"What pride! Long live Venezuela!" Chavez said in the message.

Santana got a warm ovation as he headed out to the mound for the ninth inning, and the two-time Cy Young Award winner quickly retired Matt Holliday and Allen Craig on shallow fly balls as frenzied fans high-fived each other and captured video of it all on their cell phones.

With the crowd of 27,069 on its feet, World Series MVP David Freese went to a 3-2 count before his foul tip was caught by Josh Thole, just activated from the disabled list earlier in the day.

Santana pumped his left fist, slammed it into his glove and shouted as Thole showed the ball to plate umpire Gary Cederstrom and then went running out toward the mound.

"I don't think anybody expected that tonight. Everything came out perfect for him," Beltran said. "It should mean a lot for him after battling last year with the injuries. ... I'm not happy about it, but at the same time he's a good man and I'm happy for him."

The Mets rushed out of the dugout and mobbed Santana in a raucous dogpile as security guards tackled a fan who ran onto the field near home plate. Moments later, the pitcher raised his right arm and saluted the crowd, which was chanted his name from the eighth inning on. The big scoreboard in center flashed Santana's picture and read "No-Han."

"It was a crazy night - my fastball moving all over the place," Santana said. "I don't think I've ever thrown a no-hitter in video games."

The Cardinals, the top-hitting team in the NL this season, should have had a hit in the sixth.

Beltran, traded by the Mets to San Francisco last July after 6 1/2 rocky seasons in New York, led off with a low liner over third. Television replays showed the ball nicked the foul line just behind the bag on the dirt, taking a small chunk of chalk with it. But Johnson called it foul immediately and Beltran eventually grounded out.

"It was tough because it happened so quick. I wasn't able to see anything," Santana said. "The umpire made his call and that was the end of it."

But with the next batter at the plate, Cardinals third base coach Jose Oquendo twice got in Johnson's face for heated arguments - the two even appeared to bump each other. Rookie manager Mike Matheny also came out to protest, but nobody was ejected.

"It's not like there's going to be an asterisk by it. That's the way the game goes," Matheny said.

Almost exactly two years ago - on June 2, 2010 - Armando Galarraga lost a perfect game when first base umpire Jim Joyce admittedly blew a call that should've resulted in the final out. The miss in Detroit instead gave Cleveland's Jason Donald a single with two outs in the ninth.

Major League Baseball had considered expanding replay for this season to review fair-or-foul calls and trapped balls. The change required the approval of MLB and the unions representing the umpires and the players - when there was no agreement, extra replay was postponed until at least 2013.

(AP) ? Kevin Garnett was fouled underneath the basket and went hard to the court. He remained on his back, motionless, as his teammates rushed over to check on him and offer a hand.

The Boston Celtics center ignored them, instead gingerly rolling over onto his stomach before extending his arms to ease himself off the court. Down and up he went, pushing off the floor on his knuckles eight times for some postseason pushups.

For the first time in the Eastern Conference finals, Boston was having fun with the Miami Heat.

"I'm getting crap about my form, but I want people to know it's because it was on my knuckles," Garnett joked in the locker room after leading Boston to a 101-91 victory over the Heat that cut Miami's lead in the best-of-seven series to 2-1. "That's old school. My uncle taught me to do pushups on my knuckles. That's some Army-Navy stuff."

Garnett had 24 points and 11 rebounds, Paul Pierce scored 23 points and Rajon Rondo had 21 points with 10 assists to help the Celtics avoid falling into a 3-0 hole in the series after losing the first two games in Miami.

Game 4 is Sunday night in Boston.

"They defended their home court," Rondo said. "In a couple of days, we'll do the same."

LeBron James scored 34 points, but the NBA MVP and the rest of the Heat went cold during a 7-minute stretch at the end of the first quarter and the beginning of the second, when Boston outscored them 15-0 to turn a six-point deficit into a nine-point lead.

The Celtics extended it to 24 points early in the fourth quarter before Miami came back and cut it to 95-87 with help from three 3-pointers by Mike Miller. But James had a turnover and missed a 3-pointer in the last 2 minutes to squelch the Heat's hope of a comeback.

"You're trying to fight back the whole time," said James, who scored 16 points in the first quarter but just four with one rebound and one assist in the fourth. "We made a run but it was too much."

Miami still trailed by eight points with the ball when Dwyane Wade missed and Ray Allen grabbed the rebound, sending Rondo on a fast break that made it a 99-89 with 99 seconds to play. James threw the ball away underneath, then missed a 3-point attempt the next time down ? one of only four shots he took in the fourth quarter.

Pierce found Garnett for a long jumper at the other end, and the teams began emptying their benches.

Coming off his 44-point effort in the Game 2 loss in Miami, in which he played every second of regulation and overtime, Rondo was 9 for 16 from the field and grabbed six rebounds. Celtics coach Doc Rivers said he had little to tell Rondo on the day off.

"I'm like a pitcher throwing a no-hitter: you stay away from that joker," Rivers said. "The guy scored 44 points, what can I possibly tell him?"

Mostly: Get the ball to Garnett.

Many of Garnett's baskets were lobbed to him under the rim. Boston outscored Miami 58-46 on points in the paint, and Garnett was the reason why.

"He (Rivers) kept preaching to just throw it up to him," Rondo said. "They went small, and no one can jump as high as Kevin. He stood up to the rim, and he went up and got most of them."

Marquis Daniels led the Boston bench with nine points and five rebounds in 18 minutes.

Wade scored 18 points and Mario Chalmers had 14 points and six assists for Miami. Shane Battier was scoreless, missing all six shots, and Ronny Turiaf had three points while tangling with Garnett under the basket for much of the game.

The Celtics center, who has appeared rejuvenated during these playoffs at the age of 36, got called for another technical foul for a violent elbow but otherwise seemed to be enjoying himself. While waiting to inbound the ball in the second quarter, he high-fived a young child sitting courtside in a No. 5 Celtics jersey.

At the other end, after behind slammed hard to the court by Udonis Haslem, he did a series of crowd-pleasing pushups.

"K.G. plays a lot of mental games with himself ? and with others," Celtics guard Keyon Dooling said. "K.G. is a very focused individual and he loves these kind of moments."

Wade was 9 for 20 from the field and did not shoot a free throw in the game. James, who shot 24 free throws in Game 2, making 18, was 1 for 5 from the line.

James hit seven of his first nine shots, before making one of the next six. That helped Boston score the last eight points of the first quarter and the first seven of the second to turn a six-point deficit into a nine-point lead. Much of it came with Dooling and Daniels on the court for Boston.

Notes: During the first timeout, the Celtics acknowledged Boston Globe columnist Bob Ryan, who is retiring this summer. GM Danny Ainge was one of the first to stand and applaud. ... K.C. Jones, who was celebrating his 80th birthday, and fellow Celtic great John Havlicek were in the crowd. ... Miami was 10 for 20 from the free throw line.

UN rights body condemns Syria over massacre

BEIRUT (AP) ? The U.N.'s top human rights body voted overwhelmingly Friday to condemn Syria over the slaughter of more than 100 civilians last week, but Damascus appeared impervious to the crescendo of global condemnation following a string of horrific massacres.

Syria's most important ally and protector, Russia, voted against the measure by the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva. Russia has refused to support any move that could lead to foreign intervention in Syria, Moscow's last significant ally in the Middle East.

New bloodshed was reported across Syria on Friday, with troops firing on protesters and more execution-style killings coming to light, while U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan urged Syrian President Bashar Assad once again to stop the violence.

As Russian diplomats in Geneva dismissed the resolution as "unbalanced" and voted against the text, Russian President Vladimir Putin promised to press the Syrian government for an end to the violence and insisted a political solution was still possible despite mounting frustration over the lack of diplomatic progress.

"It requires a certain professionalism and patience," Putin said in Germany.

Russia, along with China, has twice used its veto power to shield Syria from U.N. sanctions.

Although Syria has come under deep international isolation since its forces launched a ferocious crackdown on dissent nearly 15 months ago, the May 25 massacre in a cluster of villages known as Houla has brought a new urgency in calls to the crisis.

"Syria is on the edge, it is on the edge of a catastrophic situation, if we can imagine one even worse than the current situation," British Foreign Secretary William Hague said on the sidelines of a conference in Turkey.

A majority of countries in the 47-nation rights council supported a U.S.- and Arab-led resolution condemning the "outrageous use of force against the civilian population" in Houla.

"We believe that the acts committed by the Syrian regime may amount to crimes against humanity and other international crimes, and demonstrate a pattern of widespread and systematic attacks against civilian populations," Hague said.

He said evidence from U.N. observers and independent witnesses confirmed that security forces shelled Houla and that "government militia then went house to house slaughtering entire families without compassion or mercy."

Only Russia, China and Cuba voted against the resolution, with Uganda and Ecuador abstaining. The Philippines was absent.

The resolution blamed "pro-regime elements" and government troops for the massacre. But Moscow echoed the Syrian government's explanation for the killings, blaming rebels that the Kremlin says are trying to stir up a civil war.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said the Houla massacre was a well-planned attempt to thwart a political solution to the crisis and "lead the situation in Syria to a new circle of gory violence."

Moscow's pro-Syria stance is motivated in part by its strategic and defense ties to Damascus, including weapons sales. Russia also rejects what it sees as a world order dominated by the U.S.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said she doesn't quite buy the claim that Moscow is neutral in the Syrian conflict, saying in Oslo that Russia is viewed in the United Nations, in Damascus and around the world "as supporting the continuity of the Assad regime."

"The continued supply of arms from Russia has strengthened the Assad regime," and "that Russia has maintained this trade ... has raised serious concerns," she said.

Activists say as many as 13,000 people have died in Assad's crackdown against the anti-government uprising, which began in March 2011 amid the Arab Spring. One year after the revolt began, the U.N. put the toll at 9,000, but many hundreds more have died since.

Despite the relentless violence, the Houla massacre stands out for its sheer brutality. Many of the dead were women and children who were gunned down in their homes.Since then, two other mass killings were reported, both on Thursday. Thirteen bound corpses, many apparently shot execution-style, were found in the eastern province of Deir el-Zour, near the Iraqi border. Gunmen also killed 11 people on their way to work at a state-owned fertilizer factory in the central province of Homs, activists said.

There is no clear idea of who carried out the killings, although both sides traded blame.

U.N. deputy spokesman Eduardo del Buey said the U.N. has sent two teams to the area of the reported killings. "We cannot yet confirm the reports but teams are right now working on this," del Buey said in New York.

The violence has grown increasingly chaotic in recent months, and it is difficult to assign blame for much of the bloodshed as the country spirals toward civil war. The government restricts journalists from moving freely, making it nearly impossible to independently verify accounts from either side.

While Putin urged patience in the crisis, Annan called for immediate action, saying Assad must take bold steps to end the violence.

"I know we are all impatient, we are all frustrated by the violence, by the killings," Annan told reporters in Beirut. "We really want to see things move much faster."

Annan is trying to salvage a peace plan that he initiated six weeks ago, which calls for a cease-fire by both sides. The plan has never really taken hold, but world leaders have pinned their hopes on it, since the U.S. and others are unwilling to get deeply involved in another Arab nation in turmoil.

On Friday, activists said Syrian security forces fired on thousands of protesters in different parts of the country as crowds poured into the streets to mark the Houla massacre.

An amateur video said to be taken in the posh Damascus neighborhood of Mazzeh showed scores of people inside a mosque chanting "Death is better than humiliation!" and accusing the Syrian army of being traitors.

Protesters erupted in the capital Damascus, the southern province of Daraa, the northern regions of Idlib and Aleppo, Latakia on the coast and Hama and Homs in central Syria.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the shooting at protesters occurred in Daraa, the suburbs of Damascus, and Aleppo, the country's largest city.

Several people were reported killed, but there was no way to confirm the toll.

On Friday, the Red Cross said thousands of people who have been displaced because of the Houla massacre need urgent help.

"People left everything behind as they ran for their lives," said Marianne Gasser, the head of the ICRC delegation in Syria. "Most of the displaced are women and children."

Many are taking shelter in schools and other public buildings in a nearby village.

"There was not enough food, water and medicine for everyone, which put a great deal of pressure on the small village," she said.

Del Buey, the U.N. deputy spokesman, said 210 detainees in Damascus and 13 in Daraa were released Thursday in the presence of U.N. military observers. He stressed that U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Annan "have said repeatedly we must see the release of all detainees being arbitrarily held and that clearly many more must be released."

Gen. Robert Mood, head of the U.N. mission, welcomed the release.

"This is a positive act in these challenging times," Mood said in a statement.

Greek tragedy: Economic crisis sparks brain drain

"Things are getting worse and worse in Greece. There is no future for the next few years there," says Christos Christoglou, a Greek inspection engineer who moved to Germany to find work.

By Andy Eckardt and Carlo Angerer, NBC News

MAINZ, Germany ??Thousands of well-educated workers are fleeing Greece as the eurozone crisis batters their homeland.

Germany, Europe's economic powerhouse and?a country which has been criticized by many Greeks over its harsh demands for austerity cuts in return for bailout cash, has experienced an influx of young skilled immigrants.

Der Spiegel magazine noted that while Greek newspapers "printed cartoons depicting the Germans as Nazis, concentration camp guards and eurozone imperialists who allow their debtors to bleed to death," the Greeks have kept arriving ??bringing an "anything is better than Athens" attitude with them.

With more than 50 percent of young Greeks out of work, it's not surprising that official statistics show?the number of Greeks who moved to Germany increased 90 percent during 2011.?

Unemployment rates have consistently been shrinking in Germany in recent years and the economy is thriving despite Europe's ongoing financial crisis. Relaxed cross-border employment regulations for member states of the European Union also make Germany an attractive choice for job seekers.?And while Germany is in need of specialized workers, the Greek labor market has little to offer.

Leftist tipped to be next Greek leader warns of 'Cold War' over cuts

"It is virtually impossible to find a job in Greece at the moment,"?says Christos Christoglou, an inspection engineer who took a job at?German chemical and pharmaceutical giant Bayer?at the start of the financial crisis in June 2010. "It is not that there are only very few jobs for young graduates to seek, no, there are none, zero, there is nothing."

A year after moving to Germany, Christoglou's wife Mary and their 5-year old daughter Georgina joined him last summer. The family now lives in a four-bedroom apartment in Leverkusen. They are likely to stay for good.

"My wife, an English teacher, and our daughter, do not speak German yet. But my Mary will soon also try to find a job," Christoglou told NBC News.?"And while, yes, it is quite difficult to be without our close friends and family in Greece, I do not want to waste my six years of intensive studies to find myself without hope for the future."

Christoglou, 38,?says incentives are needed to prevent Greece's well-educated workforce from abandoning the country.

"I know many Greek academics, but also ordinary workers, who have moved to wealthier European countries, like France, the Netherlands or Sweden," he added.

Greek debt woes put Europe on financial knife edge

According to Germany's national statistics office, some 24,000 people left Greece last year to live and work in Germany, almost double the number who did so in 2010. However, Der Spiegel quoted?Hamburg-based immigration expert Vassilis Tsianos as pointing out that those figures did not include people who had not registered with German authorities. Tsianos told the magazine he estimates that 60,000 new Greek immigrants arrived in Germany in 2011.

There was also a significant spike in the number of immigrants relocating to Germany from other economically depressed southern European countries last year, with official statistics showing an increase of 52 percent from Spain, 28 percent from Portugal and 23 percent from Italy.

So much for 'the Spanish dream': Euro crisis turns suburbs into ghost towns

Until a few weeks ago very few people had heard of him, but Alexis Tsipras could soon be the next Prime Minister of Greece. His anti-austerity stance won his party second place in the recent election, and the forecasts for next month's run-off suggest they could do even better.

The recent arrivals include 27-year-old IT specialist Vasileia Paschali, who decided to bid farewell to Greece's political and economic turmoil and?arrived in the quaint southern German city of Boeblingen nine months ago. She didn't speak a word of German.

"The most difficult thing was learning German, it was terrifying at the beginning,"?Paschali told NBC News.?"Life is so quiet and structured here in Boeblingen, which is quite a contrast to the hectic routine I experienced in Athens."

She responded to a job offer from German engineering development supplier Ruecker, a company which mainly services the automobile and aviation sectors.

Europe told to prep for Greek exit scenario

Wiesbaden-based?Ruecker is?actively recruiting technical engineers?from Greece, Portugal, Spain and Italy, offering them a two-month paid language course followed by an open-ended contract with a guaranteed base salary of about $4,500 per month.

"There are simply not enough qualified applicants on the German market," says Thomas Aukamm, who works for Ruecker's marketing and recruiting department.?"These are investments that we need to make in order to secure the workforce that we work with in the future."

The company has received about 3,500 applications, mainly from southern European countries, and is presently evaluating about 500 of them.

"Even if we could only fill 10 percent of the open positions, we would be very happy," Aukamm added.

Many residents fear that a slow economy is cutting into the number of foreign visitors. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

'Leaving everything behind'
For Paschali, whose parents, 28-year-old brother and other close family members remain in Greece, the move to Germany was not an easy choice.

Paschali already had a job at a local company in Athens, but she was forced to accept a 20 percent pay cut due to the financial crisis.

"Leaving everything behind with an uncertain future was difficult, of course, but I was seeking stability and believe that I can find it here in Germany," says Paschali, who is originally from the rural town of Trikala.

Greeks withdraw $894 million in one day

Greece's national unemployment rate presently stands at nearly 22 percent overall ??German tabloid BILD has depicted Greeks as "lazy" ??and widespread protests against the government's austerity measures continue. However, an estimated 70,000 engineering positions remain unfilled at the moment in Germany.

University graduate Anna Sioki moved to Germany from Greece two years ago. "I was one of the lucky ones because I left at the beginning of the crisis," she says.

"Germany's skilled labor shortage could have severe economic consequences," said Dr. Ina Kayser of the?the German Association of Engineers (VDI). "We estimate that the labor market could face economic losses of up to 7 billion euros, or nearly $10 billion, as a result of, for example, production delays or necessary relocation of production abroad."

Other German business sectors are also starting to look abroad.

Hospitals and private medical practices are also in need of highly trained personnel, especially in Germany's rural areas, where many workers have migrated to cities.

Karl Horn, staff manager at the Rheinhessen Clinic in Alzey, says that health care executives are increasingly looking at the southern European labor market.

"We've already sent out tweets in Spanish to advertise openings at our clinic," Horn said.?

Why so glum? Germans struggle to find joy, poll suggests

Despite a degree in applied foreign languages,?Anna Sioki was only able to find work at a book store in Thessaloniki after finishing her studies in 2009. She decided to come to Germany two years ago.

A new election is scheduled for June 17, as debate continues over the country's place in the euro zone. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

"I was one of the lucky ones because I left at the beginning of the crisis," the 27-year-old told NBC News.

Her parents were not as fortunate. Sioki's father, an electrician, had to close his shop due to a lack of business and has been unemployed for nearly two years. Her parents now live on a small pension that her mother receives.

"It is pretty bad that all the specialists are going abroad," Sioki self-critically remarked.?"How is Greece supposed to make progress that way? But, I see no other solution for myself and the other young Greeks."
